//tw for in-depth discussion of relocating a dislocated kneecap and mentions of drinking

S-Salem, right? She had been in her shop, Chrissy perched on her lap, when the unfamiliar voice caught her attention.

"What?"
The NPC was limping, his left knee swollen and awkward. "I was trying to repaint my house and I fell off my ladder. It's happened before but, uh, it's never hurt this much...I know you're the medical enforcer, can you take a look?"

"Just give me a moment." She already had a feeling what the injury could be, so she didn't rush to inspect it. Instead, she went to grab her first aid kit--complete with bandages and gauze that she stole from Northstar.

She nodded slowly upon approaching the now-seated NPC. Aside from the minor scratches, his left kneecap was stuck out at an awkward angle.

She brushed by him and opened up a cupboard in her desk before pulling out a bottle of vodka. She poured some on the gauze and dabbed at the scratches, looking up when the man winced.

"What I'm about to do is going to hurt a lot more." She handed him the bottle, motioning for him to drink, before positioning her palms on either side of his knee. In a short, quick movement, she snapped it back into place, eliciting a loud pop from the man's knee and a loud scream from the man himself. He took a few more swigs from the bottle and groaned.

"That's better. You'll be alright, just stay off of it for a few days and heat up a moist towel if it keeps aching." The man profusely thanked her, though there was anger and menace in his eyes. She chuckled as he hobbled out.

"I'd look at someone that way too if they pushed my bones around like that," she said, gazing at her cat and plopping back in her desk chair.

Witnessing violence didn’t necessarily make a man less susceptible to the feeling of being squeamish around trauma. Sometimes, the memories of gore and blood and brutality exacerbated the sensation — every time Teddy was witness to a particularly painful looking injury, he could vividly recall the stabbings and the beatings he’d seen as a child.

The blood, the anguish, Mama’s face in the dirt, lips parted and corpse mangled. The horror show that had been her death, the pain of empathy that young Teddy had experienced since, intensely mulling on the pain she must have gone through.

Sometimes trauma didn’t make people stronger, sometimes it only heightened the terror. Teddy was not at fault for the way he responded to those memories, whether or not they were conscious thoughts in his head nowadays.

He wandered into Salem’s shop with the intention to talk about cigar sales with recent guests in The Badlands — not a conversation too serious or grave, but more so out of interest as this was ultimately the Knope’s enterprise and livelihood, too — but instead of being met with Salem’s hollow gaze and a seemingly uninterested greeting (a greeting he’d slowly grown to enjoy rather than resent), he looked upon a injury that nearly made him sick to his stomach.

❝ Mais! ❞ He grimaced quietly to himself and, before he could even look away, Salem relocated the man’s knee with a sharp snap. He turned his back away from Salem and the man, a moment to recompose himself whilst he looked around the store until the man eventually left. Teddy looked back around towards Salem, trying to conceal the horror on his face. ❝ Jesus, do I even wanna know what happened to him? ❞ Teddy huffed before wandering closer.

❝ At least someone ‘ere is up to da job. Dunno if anyone else around these parts would ever wanna put some guy’s kneecap back in place. ❞

She hadn't even noticed him, which was out of character. Usually you could spot or hear him within 50 feet, given the large crowd that usually followed him and the laughter and sweet talk that always drifted through the air whenever he was around.

Her store, however, was quiet, now that the NPC was gone.

"He fell off a ladder, most likely trying to do some home renovations. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary." Salem had seen people injured like that before, but she peered at Teddy's pale face and clammy brow with interest. "Most of my job doesn't even require herbs, which is funny. I only signed up to do it because I thought what I grew would be necessary." She pulled out a cigar and a match, puffing out a cloud of smoke before adding, "Why are you here, anyways?"
