Whilst most of these people were likely not fortunate enough to get to have experienced the New Orleans life before the world truly began to crumble, it didn’t mean that Teddy couldn't try to bring New Orleans right here to The Badlands. With seafood right on their doorstep and Mardi Gras just around the corner, Teddy would go far out of his way to accentuate the culture he was raised on. The idea of big groups of families and colourful celebrations; that was exactly what he wished to see in The Badlands.

But, this evening would not be one of those days. In fact, this evening was one of the few days this week where Teddy would simply relax, free from the duty of The Administration’s poster boy for the workings within the casino. Instead, he sat on the top step of his porch, the one which faced out onto the beach in the most perfect of locations. Here, he could stretch his legs out, bare feet against stray grains of sand, as he could sit and watch the sun slowly sink into the sea. The horizon flaunted the most stunning array of warm hues, reds and oranges and yellows, as the sun slowly set.

With his saxophone comfortably resting on his lap and a cocktail by his side, Teddy would practice until it was too dark to properly see — not that he’d need to be able to see to play his instrument. Teddy could play with his eyes closed if he so wished. He’d practiced ever since he was a young boy, the passion manifesting from all the jazz bands that used to play on every corner of a street in the big city. His love for jazz had never faltered, the familiar brass sounds allowing him to reminisce about his childhood and growing up. A time when he still knew what innocence felt like. Glancing over his shoulder, Teddy peered over towards his company for the evening. Surprisingly, it was no woman, but instead Maia who was contently curled up on a chair whilst she napped.

The corner of Teddy’s lip twitched ever-so-slightly before he turned his head to look back towards the sunset. Lips shut between the saxophone’s reed before he began to play a slow and thoughtful jazz piece with ease, something to reflect the infrequent calm evening he was able to experience tonight.

They took everything, and I'm barely getting by with the tea and cigars. How am I supposed to make connections around here without getting myself murdered? Well, with no connections, no one will buy my cigars... Salem often wandered the beach when she needed to process her thoughts. And, recently, she'd had a lot to process. Her walks had become increasingly long, long to the point where her feet ached and the only way she found her way home was by following her footsteps back, god forbid the sea didn't wash them away. Tonight was no different, really: her feet were bare against the sand, a cooling agent to counter her red-hot anger, as she walked beneath the scarlet sky. She briefly snapped out of her train of thought, just long enough to look around and see the mansions behind her.

Shit. Where am I now? She frantically whipped her head around, hoping to find someone to ask for directions. It was high tide, and her footprints had long left the beach in favor of the ocean. While nothing caught her eye, a brassy music filled her ears. She crept up slowly, trying to make sure she went unnoticed. Upon getting to the source of the music, she sat where she could just barely see the face of the man playing. She had been so sure she was going to go up and ask for help, but upon hearing and seeing his passion in his movements...she couldn't dare interrupt. Instead, Salem plopped herself on the beach and closed her eyes against a rising breeze. The long shadows obscured the mans face to the point where Salem couldn't quite recognize it, though she figured it was a local NPC. Besides, no one she'd met in the Badlands so far played the sax.

Whilst Teddy was conspicuous at the best of times, he wouldn’t be one to show off his musical finesse in front of a big crowd at one of the many Badlands casino nights and parties. One would expect him to have put on a performance and milked the spotlight for all it was worth, but instead he’d play his saxophone alone on the beach beneath the pale moonlight. Why? Well, Teddy was a confident man, but never one who felt capable enough in his abilities to play his instrument. It originated from a time where he wanted nothing more than to join a Dixieland band and get whisked away in the life of New Orleans jazz and nightlife.

You’d never be good enough, he’d be told. You can’t run away in pursuit of a glamorous lifestyle when most musicians can’t make ends meet. You need to get a real job to earn real money.

Soon, the dream would die and a teenage Teddy would return to his life of hopelessness in Back O’ Town where people would never make a name for themselves.

A woman sat in the sand nearby, Teddy’s own modest audience as she listened peacefully to the soft tune. Teddy would soon glance over to try and figure out who it was exactly, but the moonlight was only enough to illuminate her silhouette. He’d give up — he’d learn who it was in due course, anyway — and so he completed the piece before lowering his saxophone onto his lap so that he could take a sip of his cocktail.

❝ Salut. ❞ He then greeted casually, voice low and smooth as he kicked his legs out comfortably. ❝ I like to sit out ‘ere most evenings. Play some jazz, take in that fresh breeze alongside my girl, Maia, get drunk on these really nice cocktails — this one here’s what I like to call my take on a Bay Breeze, by the way — and just let the good times roll. Laissez les bons temps rouler as they’d say at home. ❞

He spoke in his mildly intoxicated state, a peaceful look so unusual on the face of a man usually so abrasive and forthright. Perhaps in his own solitude was when he was most himself; he didn't have to put on the mask he'd made to settle all of the grief that had shaped his character when the darkness shrouded his vulnerabilities.

She should've figured it was Teddy: only a man like him would play such a passionate instrument. Glancing back at the tide with a sigh, Salem begrudingly accepted the fact that, while the tide was in, she couldn't leave.

"Ton performance était encroyable..." [sup]1[/sup] Salem
murmured, hoping her words would get lost to the wind, or that Teddy didn't know much French, "...mais je ne te le dire pas...tu sait pourquoi." [sup]2[/sup]

//  1: your performance was incredible

2: I won't say it to you...you know why
