new york , mainly manhattan , is dangerous for them but they try to make it last. keep shit lowkey. surfing on friends' mattresses until' they was seen by an opportunist or snitch— and then they are off again. they hood was looking a lot less like a viable option; something that elijah accepted it along time ago, "let's go find jerry in that crazy ass cult he settled in" but memphis would be lying if he were to say he wasn't stalling; after all , jay was still there; the last words they exchanged were intense. an petty argument about something he couldn't remember. maybe about his brother. they argued about that a lot.

one day he gon' get you killed. memphis is surprised he hasn't, but the things you'll do for blood, he guesses. jerry might've been able to stand on his own but elijah was co-dependent and as vexed as he was, he continued to enable him. he isn't sure why , but it kinda been that way since they was kids with elijah volunteering a twelve year old memphis to kick the ass of kindergarteners every time someone threatened him for something he did. "take care of him" his mother used to say, and so he did. he does.

eventually, memphis has to swallow his pride; messily spray painted in the tunnel bridges he'd cast jay his love and off on his way. apparently there was some people they knew up north: "ed was my dude. you gon' love him." eli would say for the millionth time. it wouldn't be his first time meeting ed— he could nearly recall him as a client of his—but for eli, that'd been his best friend until they nearly killed each other due some , "broad that stole my wallet", as eli recounts.

"i think it's right here. damn , it's chilly." eli shivers and at that, memphis glances down at legs that eli leaves exposed; manhattan's weather wasn't too far off from this yet eli barely complained til' now. "might want to get your skinny ass legs some long johns then," memphis mused, a smirk ghosting his features as eli becomes notably offended. "i said chilly not freezing. there's a difference." in response, memphis notably rolls his eyes before changing the subject. the subject that mattered. getting them the hell out this weather because in earmuffs and a large jacket, he's still cold.

"ight so what now?" memphis asks , stuffing his hands in his jacket. "i don't know. . . i'm in this like you are." eli says pointedly. memphis sighs, notably annoyed but then finally— "protect those legs." he nods his head towards them, smile returning as he leans up against a post and does just that. waits.

The past would always creep back up upon Eddie. Slowly, and yet certainly.

Eddie surely had a lot of time in the more recent days to reflect upon his life as a younger man. With the arrival of the Van Dorens, Marlowe English, plus the fact that he was newly unattached once more, memories of his former life had come flooding back in surges. Back to the time where the Stirlings were at their peak in the criminal world, a powerhouse which had other enterprises tremble or sneer at their name alone. Alfred had built an illegitimate business beneath a highly successful whiskey distillery, both companies dominating the market.

Edmund Stirling-Moray had once been a highly regarded man.

Within those months, those years, he’d found himself filtering through girlfriends, drinking and smoking through all hours of the night. Funnily enough, he’d once been well liked; suave and charming though reserved and stealthy. He didn’t need to make his presence known - everyone knew that he was already there. He’d been a popular teenager with friends from all over. Frequent trips to New York had him in the company of the Richards family.

They were great fun, and by ❛ they ❜ Eddie really meant Elijah. Not in saying that the rest of the family were dull, but Eddie didn’t really know them all too well. Memphis was a memorable face and an even more memorable name, though; back in the day when alcohol just did not cut it, he sought for something a little more enthralling through Memphis’ deals. He could thank Elijah for being the bad influence that he was, but Eddie had to admit that he certainly made Eddie’s younger years one hell of a lot more exciting.

Eddie had been standing outside on the porch, cigarette placed thoughtfully between his lips, when he saw them trekking up towards the lodge. Brows knitted together for a split second, removing the cigarette and holding it between two fingertips before he picked up his walkie-talkie. ❝ Newcomers. ❞ Said newcomers had seemingly stopped walking at this point, Ed’s cue to approach. He trudged silently through the snow, features unreadable as he wordlessly approached until he eventually slowed to a stop.

❝ What took you so long? ❞ Ed questioned impassively, the Captain shifting his gaze to look over towards Elijah. The tiniest twinkle of elation in his eyes. Brief, but noticeable enough through otherwise emotionless features. Finally, he then looked towards Memphis, nodding his head in greeting at the older man. Memphis. It’s been a while. What brings you two to Flintlock Lodge? ❞

immediately, memphis is able to notice a shift. beforehand, the interactions that took place were brief, but they were enough for memphis to note the similarities between eddie and his brother— both young and reckless, unable to be bound by a higher authority. life and success wasn't a challenge for them, but rather an elevation. instead, they challenged each other. with success, with women, feeding off each other's terrible energy like mosquitoes. eli still harbored that energy. one might think a little trauma might rough him out around the edges, but it's as if it elevated him further.

with eddie, it's different though. memphis could see it. bags formed around his eyes, something that he doesn't remember otherwise being there before; his lively spark— exhausted out. there was little emotion in his eyes. whatever shit he's been through forced him to age twenty years or so psychologically. memphis ain't quite sure on whether he feels sorry or relieved, maybe both.

"what took you so long?" eddie asks. all former complaints are forgotten when eli sees him; he's so excited, memphis thinks he might jump into the other's arms. "nah, what took you so long?" elijah asks, jabbing his finger in eddie's direction upon his approach. "would'a been nice to have an invite." elijah is serious about that statement. he, too, seems surprised to see eddie. almost as if, despite their expedition here it might have been for nothin'. maybe they luck, or lack thereof was starting to wear on his brother. maybe he wasn't as optimistic as he led mems to believe.

"ain't really take you for the type to like the snow," memphis responded to ed, pushing himself from the post, trending over to stand inches away from the other. "we was just lookin' for a place to settle. hope to catch up." no further for memphis is needed. for him, no further explanation is needed. at least, not right now. his eyes flit to the lodge for a heartbeat; he juts his chin out towards it, his eyes flitting back to eddie. "you don't happen to have coffee burrowed somewhere in that lodge or yours, do you?"

❝ Well, I’ll be damned. ❞ Eddie huffed a short breath through his stony-faced features. It was funny because Eddie was just thinking the exact same thing.

It seemed as if Eddie had taken a massive step backwards into the past except they all just looked a little bit older now. Memphis, still soft-spoken and mellow as always, and yet never diffident as such. Oh no - the older man had always been much like an anchor which kept people steady, never let them stray too far. Perhaps he was the only reason Elijah hadn’t run himself into an early grave yet. It was as if they’d barely changed at all, which was what Eddie liked to see.

Elijah was still absolutely fanatical, just as Eddie could remember so vividly. Full of life and zest, almost convincing enough to fool Eddie with that childlike innocence of his. Eddie wanted to shake his head - Eli was such a crook. ❝ Nah, what took you so long? ❞ Elijah jabbed his finger in Ed’s direction, Eddie raising a brow subtly although his eyes glimmered with amusement. ❝ If you’d given me your home address I would’ve been sure to send you a formal invitation. ❞ Ed returned quickly, until he twisted his head to look over towards Memphis.

❝ I’m not the type to like the snow. ❞ Ed pointed out matter-of-factly. After all, he didn’t find himself here for the sheer fun of it; it’d been out of necessity, and he couldn’t stick around the East Coast long enough to let the Richards’ know that his family were on the run. As Memphis gestured subtly towards the lodge, Ed’s eyes followed briefly before his gaze flitted back towards the two men. ❝ How do you two take your coffee nowadays? ❞ He began, shoving his hands in his pockets as he began to wander towards the lodge, simply expecting for the brothers to follow. After all, Eddie could never turn them away. It’d been the first time in a while that he wanted to smile.
