His Mother was very sweet, and she was the one who named him - based on her love for the Godzilla movies - and took care of him most of the time, but his Father was a cruel and gruff man who quickly got tired of Mothra's constantly chatty nature. Moth was fitted with what was essentially a muzzle for most of his childhood, and was hit whenever he tried to speak when he wasn't spoken to. His Mother wasn't strong enough to tell his Father off, but eventually she ended up helping him escape from the house, telling him to run far away from their home and Chicago. He did this, and spent several years just wandering, being more talkative than ever and learning everything he could about what anyone else was doing, which helped with his survival greatly. Eventually he met a tall man who didn't seem to speak any English, who he affectionately nicknamed 'Godzilla' right then and there. He immediately imprinted onto Godzilla, and talked to him constantly about everything they learned, and occasionally trying to teach the other man some actual English. Eventually Moth spent almost an entire day babbling about how nice and handsome Godzilla was, before the other male kissed him to shut him up, thus beginning their romantic relationship.
