they say it will be like fireworks the first time

when he leans in
a question in his eyes
smile falling away beneath the stars

when his breath stops
biting his lip in anticipation
and for a moment he almost doesn’t

when his hands linger
holding the small of her back
bodies fitting together with no room to think

they say it will be like fireworks the first time
but perhaps they were wrong
