[justify]alrighty!! sorry if this is bad, i’m a lil distracted oof

sirius and james were back at it again with the white vans, causing trouble and spiking people’s pumpkin juice with harmless, though hilariously effective potions. some turned people pink, others made their hair change to whacky shades. of course, this was bound to get them in trouble, but it wasn’t like anyone would catch them, right..? well, they had left muddy footprints leading into the kitchen, which left them fairly vulnerable to an attack.. or, more someone finding them. they were giggling as they emptied the potions into the pumpkin juice cups, chattering amongst themselves about an upcoming test.

nikolai wasn't the strictest of prefects. he liked to think he was pretty fair, actually, but he did take his job seriously and he wore his badge proudly. the slytherin enjoyed the responsibility as well as the acknowledgement that came with his role, and it was pretty rewarding so far. he'd gotten used to it by now, so when he spotted muddy tracks leading all the way into the kitchen, he could practically sense that something was up. if he wasn't a prefect he definitely would've thought twice about just barging into the kitchen, but nikolai just made his way through and...stared. two students who looked vaguely familiar but he couldn't quite remember their names were most definitely putting something into the pumpkin juice. which was most definitely against the rules.
"what on earth do you guys think you're doing?" he asked, looking only slightly horrified at the mess of potions.

both boys let out startled squawks and spun around, james spilling some potion on him and staining that area a bright pink. sirius had to act quick, so he held up the sack of potions. “we uh.. we caught some second years who were spiking the juice! so we sent them on their way and we were trying to figure out what cups were tainted.” he explained in an obviously well thought out lie.. except for their muddy and dirty old shoes.

once he'd realized the others were more in shock than he was at this point, nikolai just crossed his arms and waited for their answer expectantly. he watched as james' robe turned a bright pink that didn't go very well with the gold and yellow of his attire, and after glancing them over nikolai made a mental note that they were both gryffindors. "second years, huh?" he repeated, unimpressed by the lie. it probably would've been believable if it hadn't been for the mud, actually, but now nikolai just raised an eyebrow at the boy who'd spoken. "next time consider cleaning off your shoes at least. lying will only make things worse. sorry, but i'm going to have to write your names up," he said, though he didn't take joy from punishing them like a couple other slytherin prefects he knew would have.

"julius padfoot!" sirius lied and smiled brightly- he loved to try and be tricky, and a lot of times he got away with it, but this.. this was risky. "and this is my friend caesar prongs!" yeah, he was using code names for last names, but.. its not like this guy would ever find out, right??

nikolai almost took a step back at the enthusiasm with which the boy offered up his name, because who would admit it so easily when they knew they'd be getting in trouble? that probably should have been a warning sign and the blond should have been suspicious but...damn that smile was bright. the slytherin had to remind himself that this was most definitely not the time to get distracted, and he simply nodded as he scribbled their names down in a tiny notebook in case his memory failed him. "padfoot and prongs, and you're gryffindors, right?"

james smirked wickedly. “oh, uh.. no. these are stolen. we’re hufflepuff.” he lied, and sirius seemed to snort softly through his giggles. “oh, wait until moony hears what we’ve done..” he breathed to james and james started to laugh. sirius covered his mouth, giggling softly.
