i do have one question- i read that most people have different accounts for different characters and they're all linked back to each other- how does that work? can one person have multiple accounts on the same e-mail, or do they all need to have separate e-mails?

So long as a subaccount is linked to your account, it doesn't need an email at all, just a username and a password. You make them by going into your profile, hovering (or clicking if you're on mobile) over "modify profile," and then clicking on "manage subaccounts." They only need separate emails if you're planning on unlinking them after that, I believe.
