the temperatures are beginning to climb with the coming spring, but what comes with that is the extra need for energy—At least, for Amaya. Due to her shiny black coat, the steaming hot rays never do well to her, and she can grow weary easily if she hasn’t eaten in a while. While she does not mind the warmer climate too much, she does know that it comes to a price; thankfully enough, the price isn’t anything too awful or horrendous.

After all, it’s just a little bit more hunting, and it wouldn’t be too bad for her to go out and about by herself. Plus, It’s always a little more hustle-and-bustle around the main core of the territory, where all of the cubs run about shrieking gleefully while the elders sit around and tell their stories. It’s all loud, really, and Amaya is keen on having someplace to think—that means being somewhere that isn’t loud. And, since she knows she’s going to go hunting soon anyways, she figures that now is a good time, when the children really start to get wild.

Padding through the forest, the panther opens her maw just a crack, sniffing the air. It’s fresh, and a small breeze shifts through the trees and undergrowth alike—spring is really coming, isn’t it? Lowering her head a bit, the panther continues onwards, ears perked forward and eyes surveying the land around her. Then she sees it: a small rodent, appearing to be no bigger than her paws, flicking aside a leaf.

Instantly, Amaya crouches, eyes locked onto the creature. She can’t help but snort a little once she truly sees its size. It’s small—is it a baby? Her eyes narrow at the thought as she creates a mental note to continue hunting after she catches it. Stalking forward, she readies herself to pounce; unbeknownst to her, someone else happens to be nearby.

(( so!! you can either have your character pounce on the rodent/scare it away/sneak up on Amaya if you want, but tbh it’s up to you what your character does :^0 ))

Charlie was actually pretty impressed that he had managed to make it this far away from camp while following Amaya without her realizing he was following her. He didn't have any bad intentions with following the older female, rather, the kitten just wanted to see how she hunted, since she was one of the many warriors of the group who brought in prey for him and the other kits. He was just a house pet - a former house pet, he corrected - so he wasn't really sure how to hunt quite yet, but he figured that following someone who seemed like a good hunter would help him.

His sneaky had been clumsy thus far, but he doubted that Amaya was really focused on him or being followed at the moment, and was rather preoccupied with the mouse in front of her. When Charlie saw the small mouse, his eyes widened with excitement, and he made a soft noise, before realizing that he had and quickly pressing down. Gosh, he really was bad at this sneaking stuff, and that probably would play into him not being so good at hunting so far.

Still, he was gonna try, and he moved to carefully copy Amaya's pose, wiggling his butt and charging forward with reckless abandon. Of course, this wasn't a very effective way of catching something, so all he managed to do was kick up leaves and dirt as the mouse squeaked in fear and immediately took off. He blinked a moment after hitting the ground, frozen, before remembering the large feline that had been hunting the mouse before. His ears flattened, and he said softly, getting to his feet and looking at Amaya with guilt on his face, "I'm... sorry.."

A kitten sneaking after Amaya?

He couldn't pass the chance so he had followed as well though he was mostly concealed in the treetops with both curved ears angled forward, he weaved through the branches without much of a problem despite how some birds would squawk at the sight of a large jaguar making his way around on thick branches. Finally when it seemed that Amaya had found possible prey he mostly kept his eyes concentrated on the young kitten that had joined them days ago, Charlie. He would adjust his position a bit so he laid comfortably from where he hid in the branches and plantation, his whiskers twitched in a bit of amusement watching Charlie mimic Amaya's position. His silver pools only seemed to glow with a large amount of interest until he watched the mouse scamper away in fear, he continued to watch the interaction before he rose carefully and landed on the ground with a loud thump behind both Amaya and Charlie. He just hoped he didn't startle them although, part of him desired that he had. The jaguar sovereign blinked both his silver eyes only to finally say with the remnants of a faint smile tugging at either side of his mouth "Apologies if I've startled you," He began only to add with a curt nod and after clearing his throat "I see that you've taken interest in hunting, Charlie. Although, it is advised that you stay in camp where it's much safer. We don't want some unknown creature taking you. . . You show quite the-" There was a pause only before he dipped his head to the side "Potential." His now solemn gaze turned in the direction of Amaya letting out a soft chuckle "I'm surprised you've managed to conceal yourself from Amaya. Amaya is quite the skilled individual," A compliment for the panther and well, he wasn't one for complimenting others although, he had already developed a form of respect towards Amaya. Now that he thought about it, Charlie had yet to grow into an apprentice and the task that would await him was still a mystery. The jaguar's faint smile hadn't disappeared until he cleared his throat for a second time.

"Well, that was quite the surprise but, you'll make a good apprentice, Charlie."
It goes without saying that Amaya finds herself to be a bit of a stealthy individual. And yet, when it comes to her flaws, her Achilles’ heel is whatever sneaks up behind her. Everything in front of her is crystal clear, and always kept under a strict eye—but behind her? Sometimes she forgets that some can even trail after her. It’s less of a clumsy mistake and more of a habit, however; usually whatever is in front of her is what she finds important. If an enemy is behind her, she’ll simply turn around so the enemy is in front.

Therefore, it’s easy for something as small as a kitten to manage to sneak up on her like that. However, she doesn’t jump or flinch when the kitten charges towards the mouse, spraying around debris of dirt and foliage like some form of a startled bird. Instead, she merely perks her ears a little more forwards, lifting herself so she sits still. Her expression doesn’t waver when the kitten turns towards her, expression droopy; in fact she merely just shrugs, prying a stray leaf off of her paw.

”i’ll Find another,” she bluntly says, mostly to herself than to charlie. (She supposes the statement can go both ways, though.)

Kunta arriving is a bit unexpected really, but alas, he seems to be wherever there’s commotion. In this case, it’s here: a kitten scaring off a mouse in a fit of squeals. Blinking, Amaya listens to the leader for a few seconds, her hues occasionally flickering down towards the kitten’s direction. She doesn’t react to the comment, only keep her stony statue-like posture as the male speaks.

At the comment of an apprentice, she finds herself shrugging once more, lifting herself to all fours.

”all apprentices start somewhere,” she casually states, her attention locked onto the kitten. With twitching whiskers, she adds: ”they shouldn’t start early.”

Charlie jumped in surprise as Kunta emerged from the brush, and he immediately felt his heart start beating fast. He was expecting Kunta to start scolding him, but, besides the small comment about staying at camp, the other actually seemed to be encouraging him. He blinked at the other for a long moment before grinning and saying, his tail straight up in excitement, "Th-Thank you, Mr. Kunta! I'm glad you think I'll make a good apprentice." From what he had learned about group life, it seemed like being an apprentice sounded pretty exciting, and he knew he had only about a month to go before he could get a mentor.

When Amaya spoke, he drooped a bit again, but quickly perked up and said, nodding eagerly, "D-Don't worry! I promise I'll stay in camp from now on like I'm supposed to... but I'm gonna try real hard to practice what I saw you doing! I wanna get really good so I'll make an awesome apprentice!" His excitement made him bounce a bit, and his collar jingling a bit from the movement of his body.
(( whoops 2 days late ))

Amaya has never really been apprenticed by anyone before; her parents had trained her basic necessities of life before she went out on her own. Truth be told, even then she mostly taught herself—her parents had been busy by the other bustling Cubs they had. (Her litter mates were quite wild and uncontrollable, after all.) Alas, thAT hardly bothers her, as she thinks she made it out fine. She knows how to hunt, how to fight, all that stuff. Sure, he isn’t the most fantastic at it, but she isn’t the worst either.

Amaya doesn’t react when the kitten allows his frame to droop a little—she only sits down, realizing that she may be stuck here for a little while longer. That’s alright, she guesses; it’d be nice to go back to hunting, but the kitten seems... excited? She isn’t sure, and unfortunately a part of her doesn’t care all that much. She’d rather feed herself then listen to a kitten talk about stuff she isn’t too familiar with, but she supposes she can handle a few more minutes.

Amaya finds her ears flicking backwards just a little at the shrill jingling noise of the collar, but other than that her face remains blank. Curtly nodding, she shrugs.

”it’ll be harder without someone watching,” she states, her tail curling over her paws.

(( she’s such a realist I’m sorry Charlie ))
