[sorry, this is really rushed! only the last paragraph is important, the rest is backstory]
in his opinion, everything in life could be separated into two categories, fact or fiction. some things were obviously facts, such as his age, name, and gender, while other subjects were debatable. one such subject is whether or not poolkit was a good person. at the age of five months old, the kitten had not only managed to ruin his own life by running away, but he had also ruined his parents lives to. in order to understand what he meant, you had to know that it wasn’t always just him and his mother. poolkit used to be part of a big, perfect family composed of his mother, his father, and his younger sister riverkit. the four of them had lived in a clan whose name he couldn’t remember, and in his opinion they had been the happiest family alive. his parents loved each other and their children very dearly, and in return the children adored their parents.
the youngest child riverkit was the adventurous one, and spent her days exploring the clan camp looking for thrills and excitement beyond her wildest dreams. she was practically a spotlight, attracting attention from whoever she set her gaze upon. on the other hand, the eldest poolkit was the complete opposite of river, choosing to spend his days inside with his parents. he had a passion for reading, as well as a love for riddles and mysteries. but despite the children’s differences, they were often seen together. whether riverkit was pulling her brother along on some wacky adventure or poolkit was telling his sister what he’d learned at the library today, they were like peanut butter and jelly.
but all good things eventually had to come to an end. one day riverkit decided to go beyond the camp and further into the clan’s territory, dragging her brother alongside her until they had reached a large river near the border. everything was fine at first, and the two happily explored the area, but in an attempt to watch the fish that swam in the water, poolkit fell over the edge and into the rushing currents, and riverkit soon jumped in after her brother to rescue him. in the end only poolkit emerged from the water, and still in a state of shock, the poor kitten wandered back to camp and told everyone the whole story.
most of the clan blamed him for his sisters death, and after sending several rescue patrols to no avail, everyone stopped searching. his father, who had sunken into despair left him and his mother during the middle of the night, leaving the two of them to fend for themselves in a clan who now despised him. after that day his relationship with his mother slowly degraded, and after many verbal and physical fights poolkit couldn’t take it anymore. he wandered back to the river in hopes of finding his sister and bringing her back, perhaps then his father would come back and his mother would love him again. but instead he ended up falling in once again, and without anyone to rescue him, the poor kitten got swept downstream and into shadowclan, where he now resided.

he didn’t want to remember any of this, yet he forced himself to. there wasn’t one day where he didn’t wish that he had been the one who died that day, that his sister had been spared. he could’ve done something, he could’ve stopped her. all that registered with him was that it was all his fault. the kitten barely registered the tears streaming down his face as memories flashed in his head, remaining as still as a board. next to the tears his face was totally blank, no emotion registering as he stared that the ground. god, his sister was dead because of him. eventually his shoulders began to shake, tears mixing with snot as he continued to cry at the edge of camp. it was all his fault.
