A very neat idea! Its crazy because I had no idea that melanistic barn owl's even existed!

No, neither did I. I saw photos of a melanistic burrowing owl when I was looking for photos too. Apparently, with the barn owls in particular, the chicks are killed by their mother when they're melanistic as they're more likely to be attacked. TBH this suits bella's backstory p well.
