what was death?

it was a question that was lingering in the back of your mind since you were a child. you were only nine when you experienced death for the first time. mama had gotten sick, you were still learning things every day and something as big as this had gotten all of your emotions and thoughts twisted into utter confusion. sometimes when you’re trying to go to bed you can still remember the gnawing and hopeless sensation you felt in your chest as you sat with her quietly in bed. you didn’t know how you were suppose to feel, death was an entirely new concept to you and all you knew was that it was meant to be a sad occasion. you didn’t feel sad though - not at first, at least. you felt numb. that same numbness would carry on into your teenage years. “your company is enough, my dear.”she would say to you as you would try to make it more peaceful for her. mama was dead before the sun came up.

you were eighteen the first time your friends made the plan to kill somebody. the idea terrified you completely, but you found yourself going along with it. that’s what you did best, you were a people pleaser and couldn’t stand the idea of one of them being upset with you.

you spent hours down by the river after, washing your hands repeatedly in hopes to get the feeling off of them. there was blood on your hands, there always would be now. you sobbed as you scrubbed away, the blood had been washed so long ago, but you could still feel it on your hands. no - it wasn’t just like a glove that stopped on your wrists, it was all over, you could feel it everywhere and it was eating away at you. you helped kill an innocent person. you couldn’t catch your breath and you wanted to scream until your throat was sore and in pain, you would do anything to feel something other than the overwhelming guilt that was quickly washing over you.

you had hoped that it was only a one time thing, but it wasn’t. this was the new hobby that bonded the friend group together. you so desperately wished that they would grow bored of it and that they would find something new to do, but it never would happen. the plans and kills would become more creative and the innocent girl you once were was slowly being pushed away into the darkness. with each kill, you would ask yourself the same question you thought when mama died.

what was death?

death is your boyfriend pushing the victim to the ground and telling you to finish the job. death is the laughter of your friends echoing behind you when they notice the tears starting to form in your eyes and you hesitate. death is your hands violently shaking the moment you take the knife and shove it into the mans heart, watching as his eyes stare up at you in fear. death is the realization that starts to set in.

you are death, and you don’t want to be.

the residents in the town of ripmourne had settled into their homes for the night, the activity on the streets slowly grew scarce other than a few people lingering around and the moon took its place high in the sky. while most homes were quiet by the time night came around, the house at the end of the street had music blaring from a battery ran radio as if the people inside wanted to attract unnecessary attention towards it. if it hadn't been a normal occurrence it probably would have, but most people were use to the porter twins' uncle disturbance by now.

rosie had retired to her room hours before in hopes to be able to read a book she had found earlier in the week, but with all of the commotion happening downstairs it made it nearly impossible. the book was on resting on the bed by her legs as she picked at the skin around her fingernails, trying to muster up the courage to go downstairs. ever since their father had abandoned them, life seemed to be a living hell being under the same roof with their uncle. while she once had missed her father and wished he would return, as each day went by a growing resentment towards the man began to infect every inch of her. how could he leave them with someone like this? after their mom had passed away he promised to always protect them, did he really not love his children as much as he once said?

taking a deep breath, she quietly got to her feet and opened the door, wincing when she heard a glass bottle shatter against the ground. for a minute, she debated going back into her room and leaving the whole ordeal alone, unaware that she would soon wish she had listened to her gut feeling. with timid steps, she carefully made her way down the stairs that creaked with every step and for a minute the breath caught in her throat as she heard her uncle let out a stream of frustrated curses from the bottle he dropped. once she reached the living room, rosie stopped at the doorway and peered around the corner to catch a glance at him and tried to address the situation. before she had time to figure out how to approach things, he was already fully aware that she was there.

"what do you want?" she remained quiet, taking a step in the room now that her presence was known. "well? i asked you something."

"i just wanted to check on you..." she began, carefully trying to choose her words in hopes to not upset him. "it's getting late, maybe we should head to sleep." admitting to him that his loud antics were embarrassing was the last thing she would do, she knew better than try to tell him anything like that - he didn't care about what anyone in the town thought about him or the fact that the rest of the town might have started looking at his niece and nephew differently because of him. he wasn't like rosie who was always too painfully worried about what others thought, if it were anyone else she might have admired that about him, but with the town drunk as your uncle, it made her want to never leave the house.

"i'll go to sleep when i'm ready to." he pushed her suggestion to the side and reached over to turn the music up louder, opening another bottle before starting to reach down to clean up the pieces of the one he dropped.

"let me get that for you,"

"get out of here, i can do it myself." he snapped, pushing her backwards as she tried to approach him to help.

"you're drunk, just let-"

"i'm drunk? are you fucking-" as her uncle stood up straight after he picked up a piece and turned around towards her in a quick movement, he took notice on how she flinched away from him. "are you scared of me?" he scoffed at her, his shoulders relaxing as he raised the glass towards her. "am i scaring you right now, rosie?" an amused smile began to take over his face as he took a messy step towards her. "answer me!"

"yes..." her voice was barely above a whisper as she took a deep breath to try and keep herself calm, her feet frozen in place as he took another stumbling step towards her.

"aw, come on now, rosie posie. what do you have to be scared of, huh? i would never hurt you, you know that, right?" when she didn't respond to him, his smile turned into a frustrated frown and he leaned over to grab his beer to drink more. "you're going to hurt my feelings. i dropped everything to take care of you and levi, you can't even pay me back with an answer when i'm speaking to you?"

there was a brief moment of shared silence between the two of them as they held eye contact with one another. rosie was screaming at herself to run for the door, but it felt as if she had weights keeping her in place, allowing her to do nothing. for a brief second, her eyes made the move to look towards the glass he still had pointed towards her. when she looked up she felt her heart sink when she noticed that he saw. the next few seconds went in slow motion for her as he angrily closed the space between them, grabbing harshly onto her wrist to pull her closer towards him. rosie reached up and tried to block his hand from getting closer, the glass cutting her palm in the process.

"stop being so fucking difficult all the damn time, rosie!" he yelled at her, his breath reeking of the beer and cheap liquor they had in the house.

"please stop-" she tried pulling her wrist away and pushing herself away from him, but him being over a foot taller it barely made a difference. trying to do anything to get herself free, rosie managed to raise her arm up in attempts in trying to hit him, her nails scratching across his cheek in the process. "i'm sorry, i'm so sorry - please don't-"

"what the fuck!" he spat and went to slap her across the face with the hand he held the glass with. rosie let out a bone chilling screech as an overwhelming pain took over her right eye. she didn't realize what exactly had happened until he let go off her wrist, shoving her backwards into the wall as her hand flew up to hold where the glass had just cut her. "look what you made me do,"

his words began to drown out as rosie began to cry out in pain while clutching her face. the world around her began to grow out of focus, not realizing by that point that levi had rushed into the house at the sound of her screaming and had tackled their uncle to the ground. she was frozen in place as her body shook in sobs, bringing her knees up to her chest to try and make herself as small as possible in the room. she flinched away when she felt someone approach her, only relaxing once she heard levi speaking to her in a panicked tone. she couldn't bring herself to give him an answer as he picked her up into his arms and rushed out of the house to go and find help.

most nights, people ignored the noises coming from the house at the end of the street. however, tonight all eyes were on them as the twins made their exit.

rosie stood a yard away from the survivor. he had been one of the other residents she had grown up with, but she couldn't say she knew him very well. he was friends with some of the others' and she had talked to him once or twice, but he always looked at her type of way each time they interacted. she couldn't quite pin the word on how he looked at her, but she knew it made her uncomfortable.

he had been one of the first ones to strongly take a stance against their idea when they shared it with everyone else in their small circle. this obviously didn't fly with them, but they decided to leave him alone when they initially began to take control over the town. as they went on a killing spree, they cornered him up into his house to ' see what he was missing out on ' or however jasper put it. that, of course, meant they wanted to toy with him and let him sit up in his room in terror as his death awaited him. eventually, that time did come and they had scared him out of his house and began the hunt. after they all had their turn with messing with him and occasionally cornering him and covering his body in shallow cuts with their knives. once he was ' weak enough ', jasper roughly passed rosie the knife he was holding covered in their old friends blood and told her to finish the job.

rosie ran after him, ducking through the branches and jumping over rocks, trying desperately to not fuck up for once. from the start she knew that everyone else had very little faith in her about all of this, some even voicing their opinions on more than one occasion. well - it was mainly raven who did that, but everyone was use to that from her by now. just as she was beginning to lose hope that she would catch him, by dumb luck he caught his foot on a root and stumbled forward into the ground. he coughed while shifting his body to partially sit up and lean on back his elbows to try and push his away from her. as his back hit the rock behind him and he realized he had nowhere to go, rosie's chest rose and fell as she tried to catch her breath from the chase, knuckles white as she clutched onto the knife down at her side. as she looked towards him and finally saw the expression that covered his face, it was the same as every other interaction.

"stop looking at me like that."

her voice was defeated, muttering it through her lips as she lowered her head. rosie felt herself starting to grow frozen at the way he had gazed up towards her, and she felt stupid over the whole idea of that. she stood over him, watching as her held his side in pain from his wounds. and yet, his eyes were glassy and there was a disheartened smile on his face that made her feel small. rosie tried to straighten herself up to reflect any form of control and capability she had in the situation, taking a deep breath while finally making eye contact with him. she was dragged through the whole town massacre - why the fuck was this so difficult for her to do? could she do anything right?

"like... what?" he managed carefully, unsure of the situation happening.

"with pity in your eyes!" she snapped harshly out of frustration, finally realizing what he had been feeling for her. she took a step forward and held out the hand she had the knife in. all of those times when they had been in the same conversation, the only thing she saw in his eyes was pity for her and her situation. a range of emotions took over her, settling on anger when she couldn't feel anything else. "i'm just some tragedy to you - aren't i?" this time when she stepped forward, it was without hesitation and with a new purpose. "'oh poor rosie - poor, naïve rosie-" their was a bite to her voice now, hot tears starting to pool up into her eyes. "how did she get involved with that crowd?' i'm not stupid!"

it wasn't hard to miss how out of place rosie seemed in the group, but in the end it seemed to make sense. she was a quiet girl that was always quick to go along with other people's wishes. she was always easy to persuade, she would almost always do things without second thought if that meant it would keep everything secure and peaceful. she would agree to take part in taking control of the town and killing anyone who opposed if it meant it kept her friends happy. in other words, she was pretty much a doormat.

wait - no.

she made the decision to take part in it. it was her choice to make, she could have said no at any time. she wanted to be involved.

did she really?

rosie's heart began to pound the more she overthought, beginning to feel dizzy to the point where she ripped the mask off of her face and threw it to the ground with a grunt of frustration. the tears slipped down her cheek as kept her head down, struggling to keep her emotions from taking over. when her eyes slowly began to travel up towards her old friend and her vision finally settled back onto him, she saw the same look of pity on his face as any other time and something nasty blew up within her.

"i said stop!" with a quick stride, she was soon on top of him, now holding the knife with both hands over him. for a split second, rosie made eye contact with him. when she finally saw a different expression in his eyes, this time being afraid of what was going to happen, she quickly shut her eyes in a pure panic. she turned her head to the side before driving the knife into his chest. already being weak from the long fight he endured with the others, this was enough for him to start slowly settling his struggle until he was completely still.

"i said stop..." she repeated quietly, a numbness spreading from her hands to the rest of her body as she got off of him and onto the ground, without looking at him, she turned her back away and brought her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them. she just killed someone.

what did she just do?

she made that choice - she chose to be included in all of this.

at least that's what she convinced herself.
