Salem had quit fighting when Giovani came into town. She told herself it was because she wanted to protect Teddy, spend all of her time supporting him, and for a period of time, she believed herself. She went a good, three months without fighting, and even without the outlet to let her anger out, she still felt content. Maybe, she figured, she didn't need to fight anymore.

Her anger had begun to wane ever since she and Teddy opened up to each other the night he got back from New Orleans. She had realized he wasn't a heartless ruler, wanting everything for himself and leaving everyone else to starve. He was a broken man as much as she was a broken woman, and over the weeks following his birthday party, Salem learned how broken he truly was.

Salem didn't regret the night it had happened. She was just too lonely to stand being by herself, and she somehow wound up outside of Teddy's home. She hadn't given that night too much thought since, but in retrospect perhaps she should have.

It finally clicked for her when she was preparing to open the shop as normal - sweeping the floors, organizing the pouches of tea leaves that sat on her shelves - when she felt a wave of nausea course through her. She ran outside and let everything out, praying that no one saw. It wasn't like her to get so vehemently sick, especially not since she was very careful about avoiding spoiled food.

After wiping her mouth, she desperately tried to recall when her last period was. June? No, it had been longer than a month...much, much longer.

Her hands were shaking as she stumbled back into the store, and Chrissy immediately began to circle her among sensing her distress. She went upstairs, not bothering to re-lock her shop, and curled up into a fetal position on her bed. She couldn't pry her hands away from her stomach, unable to tell if it had grown or not in the past three months.

The deeper the realization set in, the more and more the back of her eyes began to burn.

Of course,, she thought bitterly. She was finally settling down in a life where she was free of her mother, and here she was about to become a mother herself. Things were going too well for her, so the universe needed to violently rip it all away.

What would happen with Teddy?

Just thinking about him made her sob. He was finally on her side again, and him hers. They had exposed the darkest parts of themselves to each other, and now what? He was going to abandon her again, or kick her out of the Badlands? Salem shook her head, tears splashing onto the sheets beneath her. That wasn't an option.

No one could know the baby was Teddy's.

What they considered their profession, for starters, was incredibly macabre in nature. Not many people could stomach the line of work they so enjoyed, and so Reggie could say for certain that finding a woman like Naricissa, as eager to get her hands as dirty as him, was a blessing. As for more domestic matters, they had both agreed that someday they would love to get married. It was hard to imagine the couple ever breaking up as they complimented each other with such a comfortable ease, and so it only made sense for them to ceremonially announce their lifelong commitment to one another.

What Rhett-Gregory was most thankful for was the fact that Narcissa had no yearning to ever start a family with him. As far as Reggie was aware, he would never have to raise a child, and he was perfectly content with that. In fact, it was more than likely for the best, for the child anyways. Reggie wasn’t much of a family man — he could barely be considered a human being at the best of times, rather reptilian in characteristics — and he could not possibly imagine Narcissa as much of a motherly figure, either.

He was lucky to have her.

Some people were not as lucky. They’d associate themselves with the wrong people — some would love those people, others would come to hate them — but ultimately, that person would be the one to screw them over in the end. Break their heart, their mind and their soul in one way or another. And Reggie wasn’t one to come to assumptions quickly, but he was a perceptive man. Something was wrong with Salem. Initially, he was only interested in purchasing a box of tea from Salem's store. Whilst they hadn’t frequently spoken (Reggie was often too reserved for his own good), Reggie liked to at least claim that he frequented the store in favour of all the items he could buy with The Badlands’ developing currency.

But today he hesitated some distance away as he looked upon that very store owner, spewing her stomach contents on the concrete slabs outside before retreating back indoors. Huh. Reggie couldn’t say he saw that everyday, except for the few partygoers who'd overindulge from time to time. It happened to the best of them all. Eventually, now with a level of caution, he approached the door, making sure to let the bell jingle for a second longer than usual as he opened the door to step into the empty store. He hesitated, listening for any noise coming from Salem, until he eventually wandered around the store, picking up the box of tea he had initially been interested in purchasing. Leaving it on the counter, Reggie looked around the store awkwardly before peering up the stairs to where Salem lived.

He wasn’t one to force himself into conversations, nor was he one to particularly care for anybody’s woes for a matter of fact. As harsh as that sounded, pain and misery rarely affected him. Whilst many people would say that was a bad thing, others would see it as a benefit. It was always good to have an unwavering presence around as a pillar of support, whether Reggie saw himself in such light or not. Realising that Salem would unlikely emerge after being so violently ill, Reggie eventually decided to try and take matters into his own hands. ❝ Salem? I’m coming up. ❞ Reggie would announce, just to give her several seconds to turn him away before he’d show his face. He wandered up the steps, lips pulling into a cautious bear before peeking his head around the corner to see Salem curled up on the bed.

It looked as if she’d been crying.

❝ Want a cup of tea? ❞ He decided to ask. Whilst he wasn’t the best at confronting people’s problems head on, he was good at masking the problems, even if only temporarily. ❝ I’m sure there’s something for nausea. That’s what’s up, right? Sucks... ❞ He shrugged, pausing for a moment before he then asked, ❝ What’s good for nausea? You tell me, you’re the expert. ❞

It wasn't until he was directly in front of her that she jolted upright, wiping the side of her face with her palm in a sorry attempt to reclaim some dignity.

"Ginger, chamomile, and mint are best for nausea. I should have some ginger tea's downstairs." Try as she may, Salem didn't feel sturdy getting back onto her feet. She wanted to show Rhett-Gregory that she was fine, that she didn't need any help. Clearly, however, she couldn't do it. So, instead of forcing her body past her limits, she sat back onto her bed and tucked her knees into her chest.

"Thank you, Reggie. I must've had a bit too much to drink last night," She claimed, though her eyes didn't quite meet his while she spoke.
