Salem had quit fighting when Giovani came into town. She told herself it was because she wanted to protect Teddy, spend all of her time supporting him, and for a period of time, she believed herself. She went a good, three months without fighting, and even without the outlet to let her anger out, she still felt content. Maybe, she figured, she didn't need to fight anymore.
Her anger had begun to wane ever since she and Teddy opened up to each other the night he got back from New Orleans. She had realized he wasn't a heartless ruler, wanting everything for himself and leaving everyone else to starve. He was a broken man as much as she was a broken woman, and over the weeks following his birthday party, Salem learned how broken he truly was.
Salem didn't regret the night it had happened. She was just too lonely to stand being by herself, and she somehow wound up outside of Teddy's home. She hadn't given that night too much thought since, but in retrospect perhaps she should have.
It finally clicked for her when she was preparing to open the shop as normal - sweeping the floors, organizing the pouches of tea leaves that sat on her shelves - when she felt a wave of nausea course through her. She ran outside and let everything out, praying that no one saw. It wasn't like her to get so vehemently sick, especially not since she was very careful about avoiding spoiled food.
After wiping her mouth, she desperately tried to recall when her last period was. June? No, it had been longer than a month...much, much longer.
Her hands were shaking as she stumbled back into the store, and Chrissy immediately began to circle her among sensing her distress. She went upstairs, not bothering to re-lock her shop, and curled up into a fetal position on her bed. She couldn't pry her hands away from her stomach, unable to tell if it had grown or not in the past three months.
The deeper the realization set in, the more and more the back of her eyes began to burn.
Of course,, she thought bitterly. She was finally settling down in a life where she was free of her mother, and here she was about to become a mother herself. Things were going too well for her, so the universe needed to violently rip it all away.
What would happen with Teddy?
Just thinking about him made her sob. He was finally on her side again, and him hers. They had exposed the darkest parts of themselves to each other, and now what? He was going to abandon her again, or kick her out of the Badlands? Salem shook her head, tears splashing onto the sheets beneath her. That wasn't an option.
No one could know the baby was Teddy's.
