To be the perfect man, or to be the perfect soldier. It was a catch twenty two in which neither could coincide with one another. Choose the innate desire for vengeance or choose to conform as the hired gun that he was solely defined as for all of his adulthood. He could not be a man with emotion or thought when he’d been so conditioned to be nothing more than muscle in an evil man’s agenda. But, behind stoic features were eyes so set aflame with an anger that he concealed like explosive. Inconspicuous until the day he’d erupt. And, on that day, Anastasia Wingrave would finally die.

But, things never seemed to go according to plan.

He leaned against the wall of a derelict building — a sort of outhouse it seemed — as cool eyes observed the perfectly sun kissed woman as they took shelter in the midst of a rain shower. She didn’t want to get her clothes wet, she’d say, because soaked clothing would leave her feeling cold. The corner of Bastian’s lip twitched, yet there was no emotion there. When her father had sent him out to fight for their group, it was difficult to take notice of the soaked through clothing in the rain when the adrenaline was pumping through his veins. He was too distracted by the way he clung onto his life desperately as he fought for the Wingrave’s thoughtless cause, the way he watched so many of his friends fall that day for a man who never cared to learn their names.

Eyes darted away to look out of an open doorway, the door unhinged — as he was — for many years now it seemed. Bastian would let Ana rest for now as it was her wish. Assigned as her bodyguard, Bastian was an awfully good hired gun for the Wingrave’s cause, and so he'd oblige to her wishes. If it were up to Rune and Tiernan, they would have had Ana killed back when the rest of the Wingrave family met their well-deserved end. After all, the trio had been planning for the assassination of their monarchy for what felt like months now, and yet Bastian continued to spare the ❛ princess' ❜ life.

After what they did to Bastian’s father, Ana deserved to die a slow and painful death, but instead he rescued her when the walls of their group came crumbling down in an arson attack. Bastian looked back over to Ana; she deserved to have died that day, and yet he couldn’t bring himself to finish the job. Maybe it was the way his heart only felt alive whenever they shared those kisses in secret, or he was simply carrying out his duty as her protector. Either way, that fire in his eyes was never dampened by her affections. After all, she ripped away from him what he adored most.

A shuffle of shoes against dirt caught Bastian’s attention, the acutely conscious man twisting his head to stare at the doorway before looking over to Ana. Pointer finger pressed against his lips, a silent urge for her to remain quiet as he slid over to beside the doorway, slowly revealing a handgun from his holster. A person stepped into the building, immediately confronted by Bastian who roughly shoved a gun to their head. ❝ How long have you been following us for? ❞ Bastian barked in a hushed whisper, staring down the person defensively before he began to hear more people approach.

Only a man who was on the run would be so defensive.

// feel free for it to be your character he's aiming the gun at! he's not gonna shoot ofc (i mean, green welcomes him and ana in after realising why bastian is so on edge), otherwise your character could be another northerner on a scouting trip who sees bastian confronting this northerner, or anything!

She hadn't gone out in a while, usually staying with her baby girl. But this time she was out helping the group, offering to check inside a building for them with her hand on her own knife. She still had her crossbow, but that wasn't a quick defense like a gun or knife would be. So, she walked into the building which led to her getting a gun pointed to her head and about just as quick pulled her knife on him.

"Pretty sure we weren't following you” she snapped, being livid and glaring at him. He could shoot her, she wasn't too worried about it. Life never got better for her and her daughter would have Mickey and Green and Arlo. Though she supposed with her knife she could take him out with her. "I'm Anastasia Montgomery, but I go by Paige. I'm a mother and a member of Northstar. Pull the fucking trigger and you get to explain to my clingy one-year-old where I am.” she told him, hoping he wouldn't shoot her or maybe even lower the gun from her head. Y'know make her more human...unless he thought she was lying. That was possible too.

[align=center][div style="width: 400px; text-align: justify; font-size: 12px; font-family: times new roman; letter-spacing: .6px; color: #494949;"]there had always been two sides to every story, and anastasia wingrave had to learn that quickly before the blissful ignorance regarding the dark ties surrounding her very surname caught up with her.

her childhood was peaceful, for the most part, unlike the rest of the kingdom under her father's control. ana had been sheltered, locked away in the castle as if she were some damsel in distress in a fairytale book. she could count the number of times she had been allowed to leave the safety of the walls on both hands, and the times where those excursions weren't accompanied by her father could be counted on one. with everything handed to her on a silver platter, and her name being spoken of with only the utmost respect, she grew up painfully unaware of her father's wrongdoings that left so many people broken in his path. the wingrave's weren't beloved like she had been told - they were feared.

ana didn't like the idea of her people being in fear whenever they would cross her path, something her father had set into stone without her knowledge for most of her life. as much as she wanted them to know she was on their side, they would never see the scars on her back for the time she spoke out against her father, and his ruthless ways. she would never get the chance to make all of the wrong in their kingdom right, and the attack against the royal family secured that. there was a deep longing to go back for her people, to step up to her rightful place on the throne, and change the path her father had been set in. bastian niles had strict orders, though. orders to bring her to a haven on the other side of the world it seemed, even though there was no one around to make sure he followed through on those orders. her people needed her, and she was running scared. the idea was hard to grasp, but slowly diminished as the time went on. even if she could have stayed around, they wouldn't see her as anything other than ronan wingrave's daughter, who was she to ask for their trust when it had been broken by her father so many times? new eden was better off without any wingrave around, and she was beginning to accept that the people she once loved had only ever painted her as a villain in their side of the story.

the rain had began to grow increasingly uncomfortable within only a few seconds of it starting. the coldness clung to her bare shoulders, sending a shiver down her spine as it made the ends of her once whimsical, but now torn up dress muddy. as soon as she saw a building in the distance, she was quick to request to bastian to stop there until the storm passed. ana sat on a stool in the rundown structure, damp hair clinging to her cheeks as she crossed one leg over the other, and rested her hands neatly in her lap. when his attention was focused back on the outside, her eyes shifted to look towards him, scanning for any emotions could pick up on. the normal butterflies that would pick up in her stomach upon looking at him were replaced with a small pain in her heart, something that had began happening more recently after she found out about the truth of her family. he must have hated her, she would if she were in his shoes. the hidden affections they shared behind closed doors spoke differently, but as much as she didn't want to think of it, there could always be ulterior motives to the kisses they shared. she tried to wipe those doubts from her mind, unaware that they were actually true.

the breath caught in her throat at, the sound of someone approaching, not having much time to react before he signaled for her to be quiet. her posture grew rigid, knuckles turning white as her grip grew stronger. had they found them that quickly? things moved in slow motion at first, the person entering through the doorway, and bastian raising a gun to their head. it took a few moments for it to pick back up once the person reacted.

anastasia's eyes narrowed as the girl pulled a knife out on bastian in return, standing up slowly to make sure she didn't make any sudden movements that interfered with the situation. "i suggest you take that knife away from my guard, paige." each move she made was calculated as she assessed the situation, the name of the group completely slipping her mind for the moment. "he has a gun, and you have a knife. i don't see any of your plans working out in your favor unless you listen, because you know..." there was a small pause, her eyebrow quirking up, and a small shrug of her shoulders. "'bringing a knife to a gun fight', and all of that." her eyes shifted between bastian, and paige, slowly beginning to reach for her own gun she had attached to her thigh holster under her dress. before she reached it though, more movement was heard towards the door, her hands shot up into the air, and a distressed look fell upon her face, pleading eyes focused on whoever entered the building. seeing none other than the northstar district leader made her posture loosen up.

"ah! mr. green, it's been awhile, has it not?" there was a new sweetness added to her voice towards the familiar face. had they really gotten that turned up to the point where they made it to northstar? she had accompanied her father a few times to meet with their trading partners, but witth the storm raging on outside, it made it nearly impossible to even recognize the place. if she did sooner, they wouldn't have even had to hide out in this shack. "had i known we made it all the way here, i would have expected a warmer welcome rather than one of your members holding a knife to my guard's neck." the lie slipped easily through her teeth, making the accusations that paige was the first to raise her weapon, and not bastian. a small glint in her eyes sparked as she looked towards him, encouraging him to go along with her deception. she didn't know if it would end up working in their favors, but there was no harm in trying to shift the situation they were in.

With the news of Ronan Wingrave’s death, Green came to accept that this likely meant that his family, too, had met the same fate. It was such a tragedy — Green always got on well with the family — but barely a surprise in this barbaric world.

Whilst out on patrol alongside Paige, Green’s heart leapt at the sight of Paige through the doorway of an abandoned outbuilding, gun aimed at her. His breath hitched in his throat, feeling around for his knife instinctively before remembering that he lost it in the most recent raid orchestrated by The Badlands. Brows furrowing together, he had no choice but to take an arrow from his quiver before quietly approaching the building.

Jaw tight and eyes nervously darting between Paige and the gun, Green then swiftly stepped into the room before—  ❝ Mr. Green, it’s been awhile, has it not? ❞ Slowly, Green lowered the arrow, shoulders slumping as he gawked over towards Anastasia. She was alive? He stumbled over his words incoherently for a moment, blinking with confusion before he exclaimed quietly, as if seeking reassurance that it really was her, The Princess... ❞

With a sigh, Green quickly returned the arrow to his quiver, then looking over at Paige as Anastasia explained her version of the story. Oh, was Green quick to believe anything he heard; it was hard to believe that it was coincidental, his name being synonymous to the act of being gullible. ❝ Paige, put down the knife. ❞ Green uttered calmly, hand up in the guard’s direction as if to urge him to lower his weapons. The guard would wait until Paige lowered her weapon before he’d follow suit.

❝ What brings you to the District? ❞ Green enquired, not yet ready to bring up the fact he knew about what had happened to her family. Maybe she didn’t even know they were dead — he couldn’t be the bearer of bad news.
