so addy had made it yet another year in this new world? the idea was quite honestly laughable, perhaps even a shock to anyone that might’ve known him before he was on his own in this dark and dreary wasteland. it was a fucking riot to the redhead himself, even. the year had been trying for him; less than a month into this new year of life, and he had up and left the badlands to follow after lucerne.

he figured his life would’ve turned absolute shit then and there. but somehow, things seemed to actually be looking up for lucerne and addy. mostly lucerne, but… in some ways addy would rather it be that way than the other way around. occasionally he still struggled to find his place in the district, though it seemed like nobody was asking him to fit in at all. he just- had to get out of his fucking head. maybe that was something to work on in this next year…

jesus christ he was getting old.

beer in hand, he leaned down and sprawled out across the lush grass. eyes wandered to one side, looking at the nearby mill, then to the other side, gentle lantern light illuminating one side of his face. with a sigh he then swiveled his gaze back up to the slowly setting sun, twitching his nose.

for fuck’s sake. he didn’t know if he had another year in him. was that being too overdramatic?

// this idiot is another year older (even though he won't let anyone know that)
happy bday y'idiot

If it weren’t remarkable in the eyes of Addy, then it certainly was remarkable to Lucerne. After all, this day marked Addy’s day of birth and, after a couple of things led to another, it brought the both of them together. Lucerne rarely admitted such a fondness towards him, but Lucerne did feel the utmost gratitude that Addy came into his life and, more importantly, stayed. Even after the hell Lucerne had undoubtedly dragged Addy through, it only made their relationship stronger it seemed.

If only he had known that today was his best friend's birthday, else Lucerne probably would have done something special for him. Perhaps offer him the chance to sit with him at work, or maybe Lucerne could have cleaned their house up somewhat. After all, Lucerne’s mountains of clutter seemed to frustrate Addy sometimes (even though it was organised clutter!). What he tried to portray was the fact that Lucerne cared enough to make some semblance of effort if it would make Addy happy. Even though Addy didn’t show signs of contentment very often, the mere fact that he’d still stick around spoke volumes. Lucerne was  thankful for that.

And, with his working day at the clinic drawing to a close, Lucerne found their home vacant upon returning. He’d spend the next twenty minutes mindlessly ambling around Northstar District until deciding he ought to ask around to see if anyone had seen Addy. He was last seen on the outskirts, someone pointed out, and then Lucerne was on his way.

❝ If I had known you were going to sit down, I would have asked you to bring me a chair. ❞ He pointed out as he walked over towards Addy, hesitating as his mellow gaze flitted across the sultry landscape before shifting his weight. ❝ I finished work early. Not a lot of paperwork which is — quite frankly — boring... Although I suppose the lack of paperwork is of benefit considering that means that there were less patients than usual today. ❞

Not that Addy cared, but Lucerne did really enjoy telling Addy about his day.

if there was anyone addy would come close to telling it was his birthday, that person would have to be lucerne. from the young man’s point of view, it only seemed obvious. after all, there wasn’t anyone else around these parts that the redhead could say he was nearly as close to - let alone anyone that he wanted to be close to, either. it wasn’t so often that addy wanted somebody to be around - though, perhaps there was a part of him that wanted to spend more time with the other man.

perhaps there had even been a part of him tempted to spend the day hanging out with lucerne. what else would he have wanted to do for his birthday? drag himself into the clinic, sit around all day and bother his poor friend. instead there he was, splayed out across the grass. though at the sound of approaching footsteps, he turned his head just enough to see lucerne silhouetted by the setting sun. huh. call it a fucking birthday wish come true.

“you would have asked me to bring you a chair?” he repeated it slowly, as if waiting for lucerne to figure out his own damn mistake. then, eventually, he shook his head and supplied, ”i’m not your bitch.” as cold as addy could be, it seemed as though his words were lighthearted. unbothered. he squinted as lucerne continued to talk, sitting up so he could bring the drink to his lips. he turned his gaze over to peer at lucerne, slowly starting to stand up. looking towards the mill,  he pointed at it as he muttered, “i could- go jump off that mill over there or something, if you wanted more patients for the day.”

perhaps there was even a part of him that looked playful as he turned his gaze back towards lucerne, raising a brow just subtly.
