freddie might not be able to best his cousin at a game of archery, though he almost prided himself on the fact that he could get ed to question it. the man’s mind seemed to run like clockwork, the cogs moving constantly, proficiently, always thinking about how to best his opponent. to think that he made that clockwork mind just briefly malfunction, edmund’s confidence in his own ability wavering subtly, was the biggest reward yet. if eddie liked games, fred could play, too. and oh, he could play eddie like a violin if he truly wanted to.

“make it a month.”
“deal,” fred quickly answered, gripping ed’s hand firmly as they shook on it. his gaze lingered on ed’s sullen gaze and impassive features. the other man turned away, nodding his head towards the target. impatient. fred’s gaze lingered on him before he stepped forward, shaking his head and tsking softly. “i’ve never seen someone so impatient to lose before,” he breathed, pulling an arrow out from his quiver.

he could’ve simply left it at that; tried not to be an asshole to edmund again. though he knew where his one act of momentary kindness went with ed. he wasn’t going to make the same mistake.  “you know i don’t want the rings because they mean much to me,” he pointed out, biting on his tongue momentarily in concentration as he lined up his shot. “i want them because they mean so much to you.” how words that were so mean and antagonizing could be said so casually, fred wouldn’t know. there was a bit of a coldness to them though. and if that was the last cold remark he got to make towards eddie for a month, so be it.

his own remark was enough for his lips to form a cocky smirk, focusing on the target before letting the arrow go. he lowered the bow, looking at the shot just shy of a bullseye. he seemed proud in that, turning to look over towards ed. “alright sharp shooter, your turn. don’t fuck up.” if there was one thing in ed’s life that he hadn’t fucked up yet, it had to be his shot. part of him hoped this moment would blow that subtle confidence out of the water.

❝ I’ve never seen someone so impatient to lose before. ❞ Fred’s words were enough to cause Eddie to huff a short breath of laughter, although it held no amusement. Eddie never missed a shot. He was good, but was he really that good? As Eddie leaned down to pick up his equipment, he wondered whether his doubt would be a hindrance to him. Could Fred really play with Eddie like that? Perhaps - Eddie almost never doubted his capabilities and yet in this moment he was genuinely worried. What if he wasn't good enough?

Freddie could’ve stayed quiet after that, and yet he decided to still press the conversation on. Ed ground his teeth together. Of course Freddie was only doing this out of spite - it wouldn’t be Freddie if it wasn’t malicious. Ed watched as Freddie lined up his shot. ❝ I want them because they mean so much to you. ❞ Slowly, Eddie nodded his head. He’d refuse to react in the way Freddie probably hoped. If that would happen, then Fred would already have won. ❝ Oh, I know. ❞ Eddie decided to remark dismissively, eyes lingering on the target. The slightest hint of bitterness. Otherwise, voice void of any feeling. That would be enough to frustrate Freddie.

The arrow whirred through the air, piercing the target and missing the bullseye by a hair. Eddie swallowed hard, pausing before looking towards Freddie at that stupidly smug look on his cousin’s face. That was a good shot, Eddie had to admit. ❝ Don’t fuck up. ❞ Well, that was the idea. Eddie hesitated before he wordlessly stood in front of the target, concentrating closely on the bullseye before he lined up his shot. He pulled back, face twitching, and then he fired.

A perfect bullseye.

Eddie finally released the breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding, gaze shifting over towards Freddie before lowering the equipment down to the ground. ❝ Now don’t go shattering that fragile ego of mine… One month. ❞ He uttered softly, though it was clear in the quietness the resentment Eddie felt towards him, before he began to walk away. If only Ed could see the look on Fred's face.
