sheogorath
[b]and i say to myself, what a wonderful world
It was a habit to patrol the border, lingering within the shaded outskirts of the heated day, looking for any amount of excitement that he could find. Dark leather boots pressed into the grit as Sheogorath walked, his gait uneven with a limp, even though the wolf bite had long since healed, the underlying damage would remain forever. His sharp, boiling amber gaze scanned the landscape, his carved wooden cane tapping into the grit with every quiet step. That was when he spotted her, approaching the city. Curious and his veins warm with excitement at the thought of a newcomer, the man hurried to intercept.

[b]"Hello there, lassie!"
The man's bold, boisterous voice called out, exploding past his lips. "You look like shit! Heh. Well, not exactly, yer not a pile of digested food so much as a battered mess of a person. Where are yer shoes? Nevermind that, what are ya doin' here? What's the phrase? OH! Name and business? I'm Sheogorath. Say, you've got nice eyes, I may take those from ya one day. Heh." Part of him was kidding, and that part of him rang with a cheery and teasing voice, but the other part of him was a bit serious. Should this newcomer anger him in the future, she might find her way on the wrong end of a carving knife.

"Speakin' of eyes, ever had the pleasure of eatin' one covered in cheese? I haven't, but I will! One day. By the way, don't forget yer manners, I'm the Prince of Madness, and the King of Dolphins! Lord of the never there. I'm not quite here, ya see. I'm not over there yet, but I'm not quite here! Haha." A low chuckle fell past chapped lips. "Oops! Look at me, rambling like some madman! I'm not a madman, I promise, I'm just eccentric, and a genius, of course. After all, no average person could claim to be the Thane of all bunnies now could they? No! Only an intellectual! And a visionary! That's me!" The red head spoke loudly and with chipper attitude.

RAE MCLEOD | FOURTEEN | BIO

[ tw for slight mention of mental illness and rae being a little bit of an intolerant shit ]

rae had been keeping her distance from sheogorath as of late due to his behaviour since she'd arrived here, which could only be described as psychotic. if the older man hasn't lost it already, he was certainly balanced straight on the line of moderately insane and full-on mental, so when she noticed the red-headed figure set not far from the border she almost turned and walked in the opposite direction.

that was until she noticed the stranger. the girl was tall - she would surely tower above rae - and looked as if she could snap the fourteen year-old in half with minimum effort, but upon closer inspection couldn't be more than a year or two older than rae. she looked like hell, lacking in shoes and, apparently, a garment that wasn't full of holes, and rae felt instantly grateful for the clothes on her own back.

on impulse, rae moved hastily towards the girl, every part of her wanting to get her under a roof, although a greater part of her wanting to save her from sheogorath. as she approached, she made her presence known by clearing her throat and stopped at sheo's side, arms crossed defensively.

"what he's trying to say," there was an edge to her voice as she spoke, which was targeted more towards her ally than the stranger before them, "is that you look like you could use a hot meal and a new pair of shoes, and we'll help if we can." was she out of line? perhaps - she had barely arrived here and already she felt as if she was trying to speak on behalf of the community, but the sight before her had well and truly brought this out of her and if she couldn't speak for her fellow badlanders she would sure as hell follow through on that promise on her own.

Cat wished that they could say for sure the lives that they had taken were of bad people. In some cases, they were decently sure that they were up to no good, were going to give Susie and the Constable or someone from Mourningstar trouble. They'd killed in defense of half a dozen Badlanders, too. Sometimes it was just what they were supposed to do, or what inevitably happened because Gerald loved seeing them fight and sometimes things just went too far. They were no stranger to death and murder, and for some years Cat had been told that it was their destiny, their birthright. Bullshit. It was all bullshit, and they knew it. But the words, along with so many other things, it had sharpened them into a killer.

It was a rare day that someone in that bad of a state turned up at the Badlands, or so it was before. Whatever lull was broken; it had been what, a week since they and Creed had returned, arguably in even worse condition? And with the Insurrection breathing down their neck, it would probably continue on like that. They wanted to focus on the girl, but first they needed to address everything Sheogorath just said. It was pretty clear by the look on their face that they were not amused by his tangent. "Sheo. Seriously. Stop. Just bring people that come to the border to me."

They turned to Demeter and crossed their arms. "What's your name and what are you doing here?" Maybe not as professional as Sheo's "name and business", but overall their tone was a lot less threatening and... manic. So they figured that was a definite pro in their favor. They cast a look in Rae's direction; they liked knowing who people were and what they wanted before offering to help, but they weren't someone that compassion came easily to. Not anymore.

[align=center][div style="width: 450px; text-align: justify; font-family: arial; font-size: 9pt;"]As soon as Sheogorath approaches, Demeter’s hand flies to the gun holstered on her hip. Her lip curls in a snarl, wordless, already annoyed. She doesn’t appreciate the way he speaks to her. What kind of nerve… this place definitely lacks the kind of southern-comfort-kindness she’s used to. Prevalent on the farm but not a trace of it here, absent of any warmth. It smells like salt and the sea and a lingering industrial stench that would never be found at home.

”Now, you,” Demeter growls, jabbing a free bloody finger at Sheogorath. ”You can shut up.” Such a way with words, this one. Sheogorath’s entire ramble had sounded only like white-noise word salad to her, clearly the babbling of a madman as he had so proclaimed, and she had half-zoned out during it, only bothering to pick out a few threats here and there. Threats that made her bristle, face ever-blank turning dark, not stepping back but inching forward as if she could scare him off with her massive hands and rough skin.

Don’t speak to me like that. If looks could kill, Demeter’s glare could have taken this man down in a second.

Demeter has never liked men. There are always good people out there, so Mama claims, but so far every experience with the sex of men has been less than pleasant, and so her view of them as a whole has been more or less tarnished. She isn’t a forgive-and-forget type of girl. She is, as Mama said, a beast, and if this man made a move, she’d be on him like a rabid dog. ”Been here barely 30 seconds and you’re threatenin’ me already. Ain’t yer mama ever teach you some manners? Don’t speak t’ me like that.” She tilts her chin up at him, chest puffed out and hands curled into fists. ”Better yet, don’t speak to me at all. Clearly ya don’t know how in the first place.”

Rae’s arrival has her face softening some, happy to speak to someone who knows how to act. ”Thank you kindly,” she says with a thin-lipped smile. ”I’ll gladly take you up on your offer. I’d love to get all this mess offa me. Travellin’ so far in such a state has been nothin’ short o’ miserable if I say so myself.”

Now, Catalyst she has a hard time figuring out. They don’t present themself in the same ostentatious way Sheogorath does, or as meek and timidly as Raegan does. She isn’t quite threatened, or at all annoyed by the way they keep things short and sweet, but she is at most wary of them. She smells the authority radiating off their body--they must be the leader of this place. A hierarchy like this is something she’s unfamiliar with, but she can put up with it if it means a shower, a hot meal, and some new shoes. ”Demeter. I come from a farm a ways away. Ain’t welcome back there no more, so I’m lookin’ for a new home, or at least a place t’ stay for a bit.” However, Demeter is still a bit worked up by Sheogorath’s blatant disrespect.

”This your man?” she asks, gesturing to Sheo. ”I ain’t never met a man so rude. Hope y’all got some manners around here.” Demeter really has some nerve, reprimanding someone several years older, someone who could deny her food and home, but she doesn’t think it’s undeserved. She’d hate to find out Sheogorath terrorizes people like that on the regular. ”I assume you’re some kinda leader?”

Shut up? Was she serious? Her little display, reaching for her gun, didn't effect him at all. If the lass thought she was intimidating to him, of all people, then she was an absolute fool. A madwoman.

[b]"HOW RUDE! You don't like me jokes? Just say so! No need to get mean about it."
Sheogorath snapped with evident agitation. He hadn't been threatening her. He had been teasing her. She must have been terribly dimwitted, or seriously lacking in good judgement! "This is what I get fer bein' friendly?" His gaze snapped toward Rae. Yeah, what she said, basically, he would have offered, but it might have slipped his mind. Catalyst's presence didn't help his annoyance. "Nobody here understands me!" The red head whined in what might have been considered a rather pathetic sounding whimper. "Yer all just jealous butterflies don't talk to ya, and because yer not on the court of dolphins like I am." He determined, trying to convince himself of the fact, to soothe his nerves. He hated this girl, though, maybe more than Catalyst. As friendly as he had been acting, the gall! The AUDACITY! Oh well. He supposed he couldn't blame people for being stupid. It was a part of nature, after all. One thing was for certain. If she refused to understand him and his mind, then the two certainly would never get along.

Honestly, in that moment, he felt a wave of depression befall him. It was a sad thing, not to be understood, to be disliked because you were eccentric, because you were different. Even he could comprehend that, through his mania.

"You're mean!" Sheogorath shot toward Demeter. He felt his cheeks heat up and his eyes grow wet, so he turned away with a sniffle and walked away. Sure, he could be mean, too. He was a killer, after all, and he quite enjoyed his work, but not so outright such as that! He had always had such a charming personality, in his own eyes. It was such a terribly sad thing that nobody else agreed with him, and in that moment, Sheogorath felt the crushing weight of loneliness burden his heart.

RAE MCLEOD | FOURTEEN | BIO

rae barely managed to stifle her laughter when the stranger responded to sheogorath's ramblings with such venom. the girl had not held back, which rae very much appreciated. she wasn't the kind of person who acted with passive aggression, much preferring to speak her mind and deal with the consequences, and it seemed she had found a kindred spirit in this new girl.

she was about to respond when catalyst stepped in, and she was grateful that what they said next was directed towards sheogorath. she did, however, clock the look cat shot her, telling her that she had, indeed, spoken outwith her own authority. her only response to this was to audibly scoff in their direction. their lack of empathy frustrated her and whilst she wasn't a naturally trusting person herself, seeing a girl so close in age to herself in such a state invoked a lot of sympathy in her. in another life she herself might have found herself in this situation and once again she found herself grateful for the fact that she'd had ellis for companionship during those months she'd spent on the road.

unfortunately it seemed cat's arrival had not deterred sheogorath, as he went off on another, albeit shorter, tangent. upon hearing him pipe up once again with his stupid convoluted-for-the-sake-of-being-so words her frustration got the better of her and she turned to him. "fuck off, sheo." she shouldn't have said it, even she knew that, but she was feeling defensive both in relation to herself and the girl who had just arrived, despite not even knowing her name.

it was then that demeter introduced herself, and rae's expression transformed into a warm grin directed at the new arrival. outspoken but not rude where she could help it, she waited for cat to speak, only smirking in agreement when demeter addressed them.

William was tired, he was done with his father, he was done with everything. He just wanted to be his own person and do shit correctly. It was exhausting trying for his father’s approval. He didn’t need though, especially because he could not attain it. He’d been walking for a few hours now trying to clear his mind.

Little good it did, he really didn’t have a better idea of what he was going to do now, then earlier, but he did know that shit needed to change. How? He wasn’t sure, but something needed to happen. Maybe talk to someone other than Mike… his father was not the most comforting of people to be around.

The boy’s face was taut, and his eyes a bit dull, honestly he was so lost right now, and still looked like a walking advertisement for the neon age… whatever that was, it was something Mike had said at one point. He didn’t know what he was going to do with his life, maybe he would just… leave.

Those were the thoughts going through his mind as he wandered absently around the territory, paying little mind to the fact that he might be easy prey for anyone with a weapon. He'd been through a lot already, and it was hard for him to care about anything at the moment, at least, that was what he thought.

Surprised by the sound of voices, he turned his steps towards the commotion, his attention being suddenly grabbed by the group of people on the boarder. There was Cat, Rae, and Sheo. Will didn't know Sheo all that well, but from what he did know, the guy seemed a bit more unhinged than he'd been when he'd first met him, and that meant Will wanted to stay clear of him.

Blue eyes searched the faces of the people, it seemed that the girl was being insulted by Sheo, which he wasn't entirely surprised by, the man seemed... off these days. Will offered a quiet smile in the direction of the girl, the lanky nineteen year old boy looking quite awkward and out of place with his oversized shirt and tight and ratty jeans. "I'm Will." He offered an introduction with an awkward tilt of his head.

Honestly, he was in no place to judge anyone, his dad was... whew, didn't really want to unpack that can of worms right now... but the point was, he didn't find it entirely necessary to judge others.

Oh damn, she just when fucking off.

It brought a faint smile to their lips; though they remained mostly straight-faced. Naturally, Sheogorath responded pretty negatively to the tangent, storming off after going on his own little mini-rant. "See you, Sheo." They called after him, before returning their attention once more to Demeter.

"Yeah, Sheo's my man. More or less." Cat held a long and complicated, almost entirely bad history with the self-proclaimed "madgod", and they didn't tend to expect much from him in the way of loyalty or obedience. Even still, he was always surprising them, even when they thought they'd seen it all. "The rest of us tend to act with a bit more decorum, don't worry." Not everyone was polite, but Sheo was the only one that thought cheese-covered eyeballs was an appropriate topic of conversation.

Ugh. The very thought was nasty. "Yeah, I'm in charge around here. My name's Catalyst, and you're welcome to stay. Rae, you wanted to help her, yeah?" Hey, having someone else look after the newbies was alright by them, though they'd be sure to check in with her later.

Mama's voice was hard and worn-down. Raspy from years of smoking, an addiction that couldn't be fed after the blackout, gone soft after shouting so much. Demeter was no trouble-maker, but sometimes she wandered so far Mama had to scream bloody murder across the whole range just to bring her home.

Hey, sweet girl, go fetch me a pail o' water.

Feet shuffling, too large and awkward to maneuver prettily through the cramped kitchen space, Demeter grabbed the heavy metal bucket on the way out and hobbled to the well at the bottom of the hill. It was feather-light in her hands, even filled to the brim with water. She's always been a big girl. Mama always cooed about the size of her arms - ya got man hands, she would say, comparing her own dainty fingers to Demeter's giant digits. Made fer dirty work.

Every day was the same routine. Mama complained to no end about "needing some change around here," but made no real effort to shake things up. Demeter liked things the way they were. Getting up early to go to work was what she was used to, and she saw no reason to change that. Mama was just going stir-crazy on the farm. Said it just wasn't the same without Papa. Said he needed to get back before she dropped dead.

Like a fly, sweet girl.

The neighbor girls were enamored by her. They were two years her juniors, with tiny waists and stick-thin arms, and their candy-sweet temperaments made her tan face turn red when she and Mama went to visit them. While Mama drank tea with their parents and had adult conversations, Demeter and the neighbor girls would go wandering through the hills. She gave them flowers, and they gave her toothy white smiles (the kind that she would think about late at night.)

This last visit, when the sun began to set, the neighbor girls pulled her onto the back porch as Mama beckoned her home. They whispered into both ears secrets that would never have been unearthed if it weren't for her. She's not very perceptive, but she had a hunch.

Just like Papa, the neighbor girls' father disappeared that night.

Mama wouldn't hear her defense. Said she was a monster. The neighbor girls and their mother packed up and left with tears in their eyes. Demeter left home with blood on her hands.

And don't come back!

It still hurts. Demeter is shoe-less and her overalls have been torn and bloodstained beyond repair. That won't wash out with regular soap and water, she's sure. Her feet are raw and blistered and bleeding. She's tired and her canteen of water has long since dried up. The walk here was long and exhausting, but it gave her time to think. Her heart was in the right place, but Mama was right. She was a monster. She took her god given strength, the sheer resolve interwoven with the very fiber of her being, and she used it for evil. She used it to take away another human life - but did they not have it coming? Men who hurt their children don't deserve to live. Demeter doesn't know if she's wrong or right.

The weight of what she's done lays heavy across her shoulders either way. Homeless and defeated, Demeter keeps her gaze cast downward as she approaches the city. Maybe she'll find a place to rest here, if only for a little while. Give herself enough time to patch up the holes in her overalls, tend to her bloody feet, wash off the remains still dried on her giant hands.
