It was truly an amazing thing; for people living in that moment it was nothing out of the ordinary, as they were all used to these awe-inspiring inventions being displayed in flashy news articles and overhyped morning show segments.

Ottawa hadn't had the opportunity to witness even one of these things. His view of the outside world was limited to a tiny grainy television, where he'd occasionally learn a thing or two from reality TV; actors onscreen who he couldn't distinguish as different from reality. His knowledge of the world around him was as extensive as the fact that he knew what a telephone was—the ones with long curly cords hooked up to the walls. He'd seen it on TV. He was told that they didn't need one of those fancy things because they'd never need anything from outside the fences. He thinks his shock is justified when he comes across one of these flat-screened wonders, abandoned somewhere around the casino, where, surprisingly, it had been undisturbed for years.

Ottawa handles it as delicately as he would a bomb. He'd never so much as seen it on TV, let alone with his own eyes in person. He flips it over in his hands, squints at it, and it lays there with all the usefulness of a brick. It doesn't look that important, or like it even does anything, aside from the little home button at the end of its screen. He presses it with its thumb, and jumps when the screen suddenly flashes white. He doesn't stick around to see what it does next. He tosses it against the wall and staggers backward a couple of steps, hand flying to the holster on his hip.

The moment the cell phone hits the wall, the screen shatters and it comes apart in a mess of computer chips and broken glass, clattering anticlimactically to the floor. It doesn't explode, or crackle with electricity like he'd expected. Things don't start crawling out of it. Whatever he sees scrambling away from the tiny mess on the floor is just his own imagination. Ottawa hesitantly approaches, crouches before it to tentatively prod at the mess with a finger. kit, in all her life, had never seen a piece of useful, working technology. she was twenty-three, and in the three years pre-blackout, perhaps she'd interacted with it all. played on her mother's phone, ate dry cheerio's in front of the television, ridden in a car, but all of these experiences were lost on her. her earliest memory was being six and falling off of the roof, covering her body with bruises but luckily no breaks. she'd been raised behind a wall, the most technological thing in their house being a piano and a hand-cranking pasta maker.

but she'd read about them. she'd read about cell phones and cars, and in a few science fiction books, things like space ships and teleportation. they were these abstract concepts, and it still amazed her when she saw one, albeit a broken one. with more reading materials in the world around her, kit had picked up a number of books about electronics and technology, computers and circuits and hard drives. she liked to think that, in another life, she'd have really worked with these things. but instead, she settled for throwing punched and taking them, too.

so when she approached at the wrong time, watching a cell phone hurtle across the room and into a wall, a look of shock and borderline horror covered her face. "ottawa," she said, clearly confused and concerned, unaware of the fact that he'd been spooked, "are you alright?"

When the lights stopped working and the heat turned off, they had assumed a fuse had been blown or maybe a power line had gone down. When the news finally reached them in their isolated little home, it had been hailed as some otherworldly being punishing all of Earth for its crimes, Judgement Day, etcetera, etcetera. He's sure that even if the lights had come back on a day later, nothing would have been any different.

He really has no idea what to make of the thing he's just tossed at the wall, however. It looks like something straight out of science-fiction to him, some electronic wonder plucked straight out of a book or TV show he's never had the chance to see. It doesn't flash white again when he pokes at the button. Maybe it was just his imagination. He does have a tendency to think up ridiculous things. It's definitely broken, though. His throw had been forceful enough to damage it pretty well, to the point where even reassembling it wouldn't bring it back to life. Kit's voice has him looking up, and, still slightly afraid, he presents the broken cell phone to her. "What—do you know what, uh, this is?"

Kit doesn't seem at all disturbed by the thing; if she is, she's doing a good job hiding it. It's occurred to him that he's missing some crucial information about the world, however it's only a wild assumption on his point that Kit would have any clue what this thing is. Ottawa glances over his shoulder to where he'd found it. If he found one, maybe he'd find more. He's not sure if that is a good thing or if he should be terrified. They could be like bombs, with all the strange stuff crammed inside of it. The cell phone itself doesn't look all that dangerous, but the stuff packed neatly inside of it definitely does—or did, until he broke it. "...what is all this shit?"

Or perhaps it was just too much, because what had been there at that point flooded his memories and experiences. It was all he knew. However, that wasn't to say that he had been totally oblivious. For a while, his adoptive father had traveled with him. And everywhere they went, he had seen people clinging to whatever they could find of that world. Stealing gas for cars, hoarding batteries, getting into fights over portable chargers. It was strange, and as a child he had never understood it. It hadn't taken his dad long to decide that that world wasn't what was best for him. And so they had wandered even farther away, bit by bit, until the chaos was little more than a memory.

His life from that point consisted of different memories. Blood-soaked bandages and jokes about duct tape, of all things. Bad habits that he had picked up along the way. One of them was perhaps his wariness — loud sounds startle him easily, though he hides it all in a quick blink. Even as he rushes towards the sound, his footsteps are ghost-like. He's grateful to have the brace back, which is something he'd never say to Doktè's face, but it keeps him steady as he steps in closer. Theo looks tired and watchful in equal measure, blinking at Ottawa as if he can't imagine his thoughts behind this panicking. The young man clears his throat and fidgets with the front of his jacket for a moment, leaning his weight forward slowly to insert himself into the conversation. "What shit do you mean, exactly?"
