"kitty!" her voice rang across the garden, high and pleasant, music drifting into kit's ears, gathering her attention from the plant she'd been tending to.

anne stood at the front doors, waving her arms to gather kit's attention. kit had always admired how pretty anne was, with her auburn hair and tawny eyes, two golden fireballs that, when they caught the light just right, seemed to dazzle. all of her sisters told kit she was pretty, and it wasn't as though she didn't believe them. but the golden curls that crowned her head, the pale eyes - it was all so fair, so plain, compared to anne's colors.

there was five years between the eight year old kit and her sister, and she longed for the day her thirteenth birthday came around. she hoped she'd look like anne, when she was that age. tall and graceful, rather than the smaller build she seemed to possess. a growth spurt would hit any day, she was sure of it.

"one sec, paula," she whispered to the flower, delicate little fingers stroking over the leaves, a vibrant shade of blue that she liked very much. she stood from her crouching position, dusting the dirt from her hands. "what?" she called back to her sister, frowning.

"come in! it's getting dark!" anne was the oldest of them, so naturally, she was in charge. their father spent most of his time in his office, so anne made sure they all ate and did their chores and didn't stay out too late. still, it always irked kit, what a stickler she was for curfew. there were still few minutes of dying sunlight, and she didn't want to lose them. anne seemed to sense that, putting her hands on her hips, her everpresent frown deepening.
