[align=center][div style="0px; width:400px; height:auto; text-align: justify; font-size: 8pt; line-height:13px;"]when you put him into the daylight, there was something stripped away from him. suddenly, it was almost as though he'd become two-dimensional, flat and stark in the light. where there had once been grace with the hint of power, a unsteady, almost clumsy timidness appeared. despite eloise's best attempts to take him outside, it quickly became clear that he would never feel comfortable under the sun again.
she was used to a prowling, ageless force accompanying her around the theater, showing her the underground tunnels that sprawled out endlessly, perhaps forever. as she stood with him on the roof of the theater, she suddenly realized how young he was, how lanky and painfully thin he was. suddenly, the mysterious force that she had put so much faith into was reduced down to nothing more than a young, sun-deprived creature hiding behind a mask. how quickly light and darkness changed perspectives. [align=center][div style="width: 400px; font-family: arial; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 1; text-align: justify;"]this room was pristine, white. bland, unoriginal. various medical posters littered the room, and a small potted plant sat in a corner. there was no receptionist.
he didn't know what he was doing in this room. a faint, rhythmic snap seemed to emanate all around him, like a choir of ghosts trying to keep in time with music only they could hear. snap. snap. there was nobody aside from people sitting in chairs, reading nondescript magazines. for a moment, everything was still and quiet. snap. snap. it took the man a few moments to realize that the snapping came from the people. perfectly on cue with each snap, everyone (except him) snapped perfectly, impulsively, instinctively, like a massive mutual heartbeat. "what am i doing here?" he asked. nobody responded. snap. snap. "excuse me, what am i doing here?" he raised his voice, unsure if the group heard him. snap. snap. "what's wrong? can anyone hear me? why are we all snapping?" panic rose in his voice, and the man looked around frantically. he felt a rush of relief as he realized he was sitting next to a friend of his. "pete! hey, pete! where are we?" the man asked, reaching over to grab his friend's arm. snap. snap. pete managed to dodge the grab (but in a way that didn't acknowledge that there was another human sitting next to him), instead standing up and moving towards a door clearly marked by appointment only. he didn't look back once at the man that was staring at him, didn't notice the betrayed, terrified expression of the man who'd been betrayed. snap. snap. pete touched the door handle, and it gave way easily. without fear, without worry, pete stepped through, shutting the door behind him. the man could see nothing inside the mysterious room. the man went to stand, but stopped. some invisible, unrelenting force stuck him to his chair, forcing him to sit and stay. snap. snap. "somebody, please, help me!" the man started, hiccuping as his throat tightened, tears in his eyes. a silent crowd witnessed his tears, silent only for the unrelenting response of - snap. snap. a woman stood, this time. her eyes were streaming with tears, but her expression was blank, her fingers snapping as she went to the door marked by appointment only. her attempt with the door was unsuccessful. with that, her expression changed. she was openly upset now, her hands shaking instead of snapping as she rattled the door handle. "let me in, let me in!" it opened suddenly, and with a slight gasp, the woman disappeared through the door. snap. snap. a father and son stood, the father clutching the son's hand tightly. "i'll be back soon." the father told the son as his hand touched the door, pressing a small kiss to the son's head. the son didn't respond, expression blank, fingers snapping. snap. snap. the father disappeared, and the son returned to his seat, as though his father had never existed. "hey, kid! where did your dad g-" the man began, then stopped as he felt himself (but it wasn't him lifting him up, was it?) rise up from his chair. his hand started to hurt, and the man realized that he was snapping. for how long, he didn't know. he hadn't even been aware. had he been snapping this entire time? snap. snap. his feet pointed towards the door marked by appointment only. two men stood up from their chairs, expressions blank, fingers snapping as they joined the man, taking both his arms in a inexorably decided way. "what are you guys doing? hey, what's going on?" snap. snap. the man struggled against the hold, trying to stop his feet from pulling further. his traitor fingers kept snapping. snap. snap. "please, i don't want to go through there! i don't have an appointment, i don't even know why i'm here!" the man gasped out, sweating from his impossible battle with these two silent, snapping men. "we all have appointments, even if we didn't plan them." the voice seemed to be nondescript, somehow young and old and accented and unaccented, deep and high, soft and raspy and everything in between. there was no source of the voice, but the man had a feeling that it came from the entire room. snap. snap. "please, i need to postpone-" snap. snap. "please, i have so much to do today-" snap. snap. the door grew closer, and one of the men reached out a hand to open it for the man. snap. snap. "oh god, please, i'm not ready!" the room inside was unfocused. it was light and dark, filled and empty. it was impossible for him to comprehend, and the man was afraid (yet wasn't) as he stared into it. his hands shook, and he dried them on his purple jeans as he turned to look into the other men's faces. they seemed to understand, in some twisted way. the man reached out a hand (no longer snapping) to grab the man's black shirt, but it was too late. his feet toed across the doorframe, and the man was staring into darkness. behind him, he could feel the cold, empty room and hear the faint, rhythmic, maddening noise. snap. snap. the door shut, and the man knew nothing more.
