the matter-of-fact tone would be unnerving to anyone, but add the fact that the woman speaking it was one of the few unmatched detectives in the world, and that made things worse.

"what did you say?"

"you heard me. i saw your face, you recognized and understood. i'm certain of it, in fact. at least, i'm ninety-three percent so." brushing her hair back and returning to her dutiful taste of picking apart the covering of the pocky sticks in front of her, lawliet paused. "confused?"

"suki, you just accused me of killing you."

"not yet, but in the future." popping a stick in her mouth, lawliet looked around the room, eyes unnervingly intense as she stared at the man she'd just accused. most avoided lawliet's gaze when they could, because you could gain nothing and lose everything by just making eye contact.

"i think within the next two years. maybe sooner." she spoke this like she was discussing the weather, and jumped off the office chair she was crouching on (she never sat anywhere, bare feet noiseless as she paced.

"suki, you're rambling. this is insane! why would i want to kill you?"

"because i'm a threat to your perfect, indistinguishable life." scratching at the skin on her hand, lawliet turned to face the man, her exhausted face unnerving in the cold light of the room. "nobody else will be able to prove what i can prove if i die, alois. i'm your one, single pin in this massive game of bowling."

the ridiculous metaphor made the man snort. lawliet didn't look like she found the thing amusing.

"regardless of when i die, park iseul, let me make this clear: whether i die on this case, or i die after i finally, finally expose you for the lying murderer you are, i will be taking you down with me."

the room became deathly quiet.
