Despite this, Green hadn’t a clue how bread was made until his mother-in-law would teach him one afternoon. Brows knitted together and a smile lingering on his lips, Green watched as Tamara kneaded bread in the bakery in the center of the District. It was the only place with a suitable enough woodfire oven for baking, and the bakery felt toasty as embers glowed hot in the oven.

❝ How long do you do this for? ❞ Arlo quietly asked as he sat upon a tall seat, tall enough for him to be able to see over the counter. Tamara glanced over at him whilst she worked the dough, replying with a gentle smile, ❝ Around five minutes. You want the dough all soft and stretchy. ❞ With rounded lips, Arlo made a small sound of acknowledgement as he watched, shifting in his seat before reaching over to gently poke at the dough. ❝ You can get started on the batch over there. ❞ Tamara nodded over towards the other bowls of dough that had been left several hours to rise and ferment.

Arlo was quick to get to work, messily joining in with kneading a batch of bread, Green wandering over to his side before taking a dash of leftover flour and swiping it across Arlo’s cheek. ❝ Hey! ❞ Arlo whined quietly, scrunching his nose up as he glared at Green before beginning to giggle and push Green’s hand away. ❝ What? ❞ Green asked with a grin, trying to conceal his laughter with one or two quiet huffs. Arlo pinched a small piece of the dough off, pushing it towards Green before he tried to suppress his laughter, himself. ❝ Eat it. ❞ He mumbled softly, Green pulling his head away with a feigned grimace before Arlo lowered his arm, snickering at Green’s theatrical expressions.

With an amused smile, Green lifted his head to glance at Tamara, the older woman looking back as she slowly shook her head, a pleased smile on her lips. At this moment, Green felt overjoyed. It felt as if he finally had a family, one which he would not only end up losing in the same way as his last two notions of a family.
