Not that it was a big deal, right? He had a painfully dry sense of humor, it often being difficult to tell whether or not he was being serious. But, that wasn’t even funny if he wanted to play it off as a joke, was it? Way to make a fool of himself. ❝ No, actually, these are kittens. ❞ William huffed a breath out of his nose. Atta girl - at least she was giving him an opportunity to crouch down and shovel up the remains of his poorly departed ❛ joke ❜. ❝ Yeah, my bad. Rabbits, dogs, cats - they all look the same to me. ❞ Playful sarcasm before he stepped slightly closer, attention swiftly shifting from the puppy in Joey’s arms and up to her face.

❝ Your name? ❞ Oh, she had to have known his name by now. It wasn’t like he’d ever introduced himself to her officially, but he’d just assumed that she would’ve known a Stirling when she saw one. They were - like - famous at this point, no? William’s ego could have been shattered at this point, but he liked the game that she was playing. Playing hard to get? It would only make whatever game of chase this was all the more enthralling to William, and he loved the rush of adrenaline sent coursing through his veins. ❝ William Stirling. ❞ He pointed out, pausing before adding, ❝ Will… You’re Joey, right? ❞ Perhaps it sounded like he was trying to play it off as cool when reality perhaps he did need some reminding. He was clueless. What? The Van Doren family had always been a big one! One with many pretty women in!

Now, William wasn’t really an animal person, the man bunching his brows together for a moment as he watched the second puppy chewing at her shoe lace. How did she find that endearing? As she began to talk again, William shifted his gaze up to her before shrugging, ❝ I’d say you’re fine taking them. They’ve basically chosen you so you can’t turn ‘em away now. ❞ But then, her attention was back on him. Just how he liked it. ❝ Actually I am very involved here. I’m basically their mother. ❞ He replied plainly, although humour laced his monotonous words as he peered at the whelping pen of other puppies. ❝ They’re very cute, aren’t they? ❞ He didn’t sound convinced, but who knew with William anymore?

If only Joey knew he only said that because… all women loved a man who was a dog person, right?
