immediately, memphis is able to notice a shift. beforehand, the interactions that took place were brief, but they were enough for memphis to note the similarities between eddie and his brother— both young and reckless, unable to be bound by a higher authority. life and success wasn't a challenge for them, but rather an elevation. instead, they challenged each other. with success, with women, feeding off each other's terrible energy like mosquitoes. eli still harbored that energy. one might think a little trauma might rough him out around the edges, but it's as if it elevated him further.
with eddie, it's different though. memphis could see it. bags formed around his eyes, something that he doesn't remember otherwise being there before; his lively spark— exhausted out. there was little emotion in his eyes. whatever shit he's been through forced him to age twenty years or so psychologically. memphis ain't quite sure on whether he feels sorry or relieved, maybe both.
"what took you so long?" eddie asks. all former complaints are forgotten when eli sees him; he's so excited, memphis thinks he might jump into the other's arms. "nah, what took you so long?" elijah asks, jabbing his finger in eddie's direction upon his approach. "would'a been nice to have an invite." elijah is serious about that statement. he, too, seems surprised to see eddie. almost as if, despite their expedition here it might have been for nothin'. maybe they luck, or lack thereof was starting to wear on his brother. maybe he wasn't as optimistic as he led mems to believe.
"ain't really take you for the type to like the snow," memphis responded to ed, pushing himself from the post, trending over to stand inches away from the other. "we was just lookin' for a place to settle. hope to catch up." no further for memphis is needed. for him, no further explanation is needed. at least, not right now. his eyes flit to the lodge for a heartbeat; he juts his chin out towards it, his eyes flitting back to eddie. "you don't happen to have coffee burrowed somewhere in that lodge or yours, do you?"
