Edmund had not been one to willingly welcome the plight of a blizzard. For more months than not, a blizzard was all that this environment could be reduced to. Bitterly cold; the kind of numbing cold which could almost be compared to as near circumpolar. But, Eddie didn’t choose to be here. In fact, he doubted that many chose to remain here for too long. But, it’d been Alfred’s idea to seek refuge somewhere where nobody would find them. What were they running away from? Well, Edmund felt like, at that point, they were running away from the whole world.
At first, Edmund had been bitter, silently resentful and, like a volcano waiting to erupt, it’d only be time before he boiled over. It’d taken months for him to reach that point, a man so tolerant of the life he’d received until he began to enjoy the company of Flintlock Lodge. This was beginning to feel like home, an unsettling sensation which he welcomed so readily because this was nothing like how he’d been raised, yet exactly how he’d grown up all the same. There was little violence, but there was unity. Strength in numbers, yet sensitive. It confused Eddie; how could a group so rigidly enforced be so benevolent?
One day, he lost control. It came on the day that his brother died. Dominik almost had it all - they’d located his own family, and Eddie had never seen Nik so bright and enthusiastic in months. Dominik almost had it all until Alfred shot him three times. It was a pain which demanded to be felt and so, in retaliation, Eddie killed the man who had changed his life.
Alfred wanted order within his sons, a megalomaniac who would stop at nothing to maintain it. He wanted their minds as bitter and cold as the winds of Flintlock Lodge. He would refuse to hold any sentiment towards the group because all they were good for were the resources they provided so that he could run away like a coward. Edmund was supposed to hold the same opinion.
Instead, Edmund felt almost defiant towards his father. He was devoted entirely to his family, but family had to be earned. All but his father had given him good reason to protect them, stand up for them, and so if it were between his father and his brothers, he’d end the life of the man that taught him everything he knew.
Sometimes Edmund felt remorseful when he walked these lands. In fact, he often felt guilt more than joy or anxiety or pain. It ate at him like a virus digging through into his system. He was plagued, diseased and aching with regret. A survivor’s guilt. The horror of being the one to end his own father’s life. The torment of being the reason why his own brother died.
He’d been a hero that day, but he’d saved everyone but himself.
Boots submerged beneath thick blankets of snow as Ed trudged on his patrol. Whether or not people noticed, he tended to avoid the area which had once been stained with his brother’s blood if he could help it. But, he couldn’t help but stop upon noticing a woman walking by that very place, seemingly unfazed. Ed watched for a moment, curious yet somewhat perplexed by her nonchalant (perhaps exhausted?) demeanor, before he chose to stalk over quietly. ❝ It’s not the greatest of conditions to be walking around in. ❞ He called out matter-of-factly, features stoic as he observed the woman. ❝ Are you looking for Flintlock Lodge? ❞
