harrison was raised in a very loving family with his mother, father, and two sisters (one older and one younger). he lived a rather simple, happy lifestyle filled with love and all that he could really ask for in life. he was an aspiring hairstylist. his family wasn't rich - middle class at best - and his dad had a terminal illness, but they were well off with love and happiness.
when the electricity went out, however, everything took a slow decline. his father's health steadily declined with lack of proper treatment for his terminal illness, and he passed away months after the electricity went out. he vividly remembers holding his dad's hand, quietly uttering prayers with his family as he passed. it was the way he would've wanted to leave the world, and harrison, though upset about him being gone from his life, isn't as affected by it because of his relatively peaceful passing.
the world didn't seem to want peaceful passing for everyone in the family, it seemed. their neighborhood had been fairly safe from any harm, although neighboring gangs sometimes would cause a fright. everything changed one day when those gangs decided to expand their borders and venture into nearby neighborhoods. the whole street was full of fire and carnage. he remembers the trauma of that night when someone from the clearwaters gang broke into their house. harrison, his sister ellie, and mickey - his sister's boyfriend - had hid in the closet. his mom had stayed out in the open to make sure the gang didn't find her kids. he hadn't even gotten to say goodbye to hear, merely heard her in her final moments as the gang tortured her. while she was being hurt, his older sister who had been hiding somewhere else went out to try and save their mom, and she ended up dying with her. he remembers whispering almost-silent prayers amidst the turmoil and screams, while mickey held a hand over ellie's mouth to keep their cover from being blown. it was the first traumatizing event harrison had ever faced; he still has nightmares of that night.
after that, mickey, ellie, and harrison joined the carbines, a rivaling gang to the clearwaters. they always thought that they'd be safe there, since the carbines seemed far superior to the clearwaters. harrison had started to really find his place there, but only less than a month after joining the carbines he ended up getting confronted with a very harsh task. he was asked to prove his loyalty to the gang by killing his sister, since she was a weak link and didn't belong in the gang. it took him less than a second to disagree with their orders. the gang leader saw it as a sign of disloyalty and ordered his friends, tom and john, to kill harrison slowly and painfully.
without mickey or ellie knowing, he was tied up and thrown into a lake. every moment in the water was agonizing and, only by a stroke of absolute luck was he able to undo one of the ties and survive. he wanted to tell ellie and mickey about what had happened, he really had - but he couldn't go back into carbine territory. so he waited. he waited for days, days became weeks, and after about a month he decided that mickey and ellie weren't going to go out looking for him. he wants to be angry about that point in his life, but he only looks back on it with bittersweet sadness.
he realized after that that he was all alone. but that loneliness was rather short-lived. while out in the world by himself definitely made him more independent, he still hadn't lost complete faith in humanity. after coming across a group of siblings, the overtons, he ended up joining their little rag-tag group. he formed close bonds with people and came to terms with his sexuality when he ended up dating on of the men in his group. however, good things always seemed to come to an end.
the carbines had caught wind of harrison surviving, and they had gone after him. the carbines ended up kidnapping his crush, and the group harris was with devised a plan. backstab harrison by trading him off for their brother. and that was exactly what they set to do; however, during the trade-off, it was revealed that the carbines had killed their captive. the group's initial plan of trading harrison for their brother turned into an act of revenge, handing him over to the carbines to simply get rid of him.
they left him to die, just like the carbines had. while his luck was definitely running out, he'd managed to escape from the carbines while the clearwaters, a rivaling group, opened fire on them during their trip back to carbine territory. while that happened, he ran away.
and with that he ended up making his way to flintlock.
