That phrase was repeated to him like a broken record throughout his childhood. Family. Duty. Honor. The Stirlings would strive for success together, and together meant that nobody could be left behind. They were a very united family, brought together by their very strong desire to be the most powerful; megalomania was their adage. But, this contrasted against Edmund's general dislike towards children. They were simply so loud and whiny and always wanted things their way. Eddie was over all the children tantrums he had to endure in his lifetime, enough to make him pretty certain that he'd never even dream of having his own kid one day.

This was the very issue that conflicted Eddie. Henry and Ida. Two children.

Henry was layered up in so much warm clothing that he could barely bend his limbs as he leaned down to collect a clump of fresh snow. The nine year old wasn't too exasperating, apart from the times where he'd not listen to Eddie when the older man attempted to give him a command. Being ignored like that infuriated Eddie, but what could he do to keep a kid under control? Ida, on the other hand, was easier to manage. She was at the age where all she could think of was to go and explore, and then share her stories afterwards. The six year old blonde girl had her knees tucked beneath her as she knelt down in the snow, patting solid clumps of snow that Henry was passing over in an attempt to make a snowman. Eddie observed a short distance away, sat on the top step of the stairs leading to the Lodge's front doors, a cigarette lodged between his lips as he kept a close eye on his two step-siblings playing.

He did not have much say in the matter when it came to becoming their legal guardian. After all, his father and his girlfriend - Henry and Ida's parents - never made it back to the trio safely after a scavenging trip. Ed could only assume that they were captured or killed. Though, stern instructions to find a safe space for the two children lead Ed to Flintlock Lodge. Here, they'd be safe. He shakily exhaled a deep puff of smoke, body rattling lightly from the cold that began to seep into his bones. How were the kids not able to feel this cold? Excitement, probably. Soft blue eyes scanned the surrounding area, provoking one thought in his mind: although he was not very good with children, what could Henry and Ida have done without Eddie's help? Very little... They probably would have died out in these subzero conditions. Eyebrows furrowed. Despite his distaste towards youngsters, these were his siblings. Family first. They'd always be first in Eddie's eyes.
