 mickey’s knowledge on fighting and war was vast. he’d spent too long being the one planning the wars, heading his men into war between gangs. part of him had wondered if he really even needed to show up to this training; however, he’d decided that if he didn’t, then ellie probably wouldn’t have been too interested in going, either. but ellie needed to learn how to defend herself. mickey had spent way too long prolonging teaching her these things, to try and maintain her innocence. keep that light inside of her intact. sure, he’d showed her how to wield a gun, how to point and shoot - but she would need more than that in this world, wouldn’t she? he should’ve been the one to teach her all of that back then, he supposed.

he glanced around from his spot at the table, finding ellie rather easily in the room. “want to partner up?†he asked, offering the slightest hint of a smile - the best that he could muster. ellie had sort of managed to save his life by bringing them here. whatever distance that had been between them only seemed to be disappearing the longer they were around one another. mick had made some mistakes, but his ex-fiance could still be his best friend. still be the love of his life. just in a different way. “don’t make me look too bad, now,†he joked, standing up and moving away from his spot at the table.
