> I've been having really weird dreams about a sewer town ( I am also not allowed to watch Flushed Away before bed anymore ) and I've been throwing that idea around for a little bit. I would have to research defects when it comes to lack of light exposure because that would be important to accurately represent a character who was born and raised with rarely—if ever—getting to see the sun. I really love this idea I'm just not sure how to go about implementing it, although, I'd be willing to try if I can figure something out. notes below.
    > I'm about to build an entire underground civilization and the first thing that comes to mind is: overpopulation. A possible reason my character could have left was because there just wasn't enough food / they did not agree with the methods used to ration what food there was. Infanticide most certainly happened, if anyone actually made it into their elderly years they often starved to death as families cut them off in hopes of feeding their children. It is a dog eat dog world. If you weren't strong enough, smart enough, or clever enough to survive then you died.
    > In this underground city if infanticide wasn't needed in order to control the population then families usually had a lot of children in order to make money / bring home more food ( honestly, it wasn't well thought out ) and if things became too slim then families would abandoned their children. That or, sometimes, they would sell said children into servitude or marriages to the better off in order to make enough money or food to feed the family for the rest of the week.
    > I'm not sure if my character is going to be male, female, or nb yet but I feel like their gender wouldn't matter much? There's not really a whole lot of gender / sexuality / race hate that can happen in a place where someone will kill their own children for enough food / money to keep themselves alive. So I don't think I have to worry too much on that front? There likely aren't a lot of monogamous couples and they likely have a different idea of what "marriage" is because life-spans tend to be a lot shorter.
    > There are a lot of sick people, a lot of genetic disorders and various plague-like breakouts that often nearly half the population. Although, the people tend to be hardier and are immune to diseases that still affect people who live on the surface because after the breakouts only the strong survived thus there is more of a resilience to certain disorders. Most disorders are factors of the lack of vitamin d and / or the lack of healthy plants and fruits... and also the wading through human feces and ( probably ) the bodies of the deceased that weren't eaten.
    > They likely speak a very simplified version of English and with very little understanding of how verbs / sentence structuring actually works. All are illiterate and can only communicate through pictures and or verbal speech but can't understand written language. "Ain 'bout ow ya see youself but ow you percieves youself."
    > I have no idea how the names should be structured. It's likely all names are just varied versions of actual names that have modified over time and just make no sense now—i.e. Henry now as Henvidy or something similar.

> When it comes to appearance they are varied, however, a lot of them tend to follow a certain make-up genetically. All of them are unhealthily pale and sickly, often with creamy / lighter eye colors that seem glossed over ( said eyes are extremely sensitive to light and it's likely that they have ridiculously amazing eye sight in the dark ). The people themselves seem a lot shorter in stature with thinner limbs, usually longer canines but that depends on the area they inhabit within the sewer.
