val roux is an extremely empathetic person. until the age of 8, everyone in his life viewed him as a girl and even after he came out and moved away from his horrible father and began living his life as a boy, it was still an uphill battle to be viewed as one. puberty blockers and testosterone has done him wonders, but especially from ages 9-12, lots of strangers and the general public viewed him as a little tomboy. these were probably the scariest years of val's life. because not only did he live in fear that strangers viewed him as something different than he was, but he also lived in fear because of what those strangers viewed him as. he doesn't understand what it's like to be a woman, but he's experienced misguided misogyny and knows how deeply horrifying it can be. because of this, val has made it his mission to be a beacon of safety in a world full of greasy, manipulative, violent men. being gay automatically makes a lot of women more comfortable around him, as they no longer perceive him as a potential sexual threat since he's not attracted to them, and beyond this, he does everything he can to make sure his female friends feel safe around him and in his spaces. and he does everything he can to spread this mindset to his male peers.
this led to a very intense happening when valentin was 18. val has a very close friend, angelica. they've spent countless nights with mud masks on, watching music videos and making fun of straight people. angelica, a bisexual woman, was dating a straight guy (named cody) at the time and was looking to get out of the relationship, as she felt trapped and like he viewed her not as an equal but as an accessory. val had helped angelica figure out the wording she wanted to use, the night she wanted to do it, and he was on call in case anything went wrong. he didn't hear from her the entire night. and when he didn't hear from her the next morning either, he went over to her house. angelica's mom answered the front door, told him she wasn't doing very well and let him in.
angelica hadn't told her mother exactly what happened. she wasn't home at the time, she works nights, and all her mom really knew was that it hadn't gone the way she'd hoped and that angelica was not acting as she normally was. but she didn't think much of it, its a break up, they're painful.
val walked into the room and closed the door behind him. angelica was in a heap on her bed, her long brown hair flipped over her face and her limbs uncomfortably folded. he sat down on her bed began clearing her tangled hair from her face. he spent the day coaxing her through self care, making her take a shower, cooking her some breakfast, getting her room a little cleaned up for her. eventually, she turned to him, buried her face in his chest and began to cry. and for a few minutes, he just let her. he pet her hair and held her and just let her soak his shirt because she needed it. they had barely talked since he arrived, which he was fine with, he assumed she'd need some time. but now, she begins to tell the story of what had happened the night before between sobs.
she's hard to understand but he gets the gist. and his blood begins to boil. i won't relay the details of it, but cody had forced himself on her before collecting whatever in her room he felt he had the right to and leaving her there on her bed. for now, he swallows his rage. for now, he simply whispers in her ear "he won't get away with it." and he puts on a funny movie and he helps her figure out what she has to do next. he helped her tell her mom, he helped her research trauma counselors who took her insurance. and he had her stay with him for a few days, so she wouldn't have to exist in the room where it happened until she can feel a bit more stable.
but the moment he was alone, the anger began to seep out. he made a plan. this, i will recollect the details of.
it's 12am. val, and two of his friends, jayden and noel are sitting up against cody's car in the parking lot of the dominos where he works. they're all in black hoodies, but honestly val isn't particularly worried about further repercussions. he gave angelica a reason not to go to the cops, and val its just going to return the courtesy.
cody opens the door to dominos and locks it behind him. he doesn't notice the three figures at the other side of the parking lot, his mind is buried in his phone. val takes pleasure in destroying that momentary peace.
"hey! cody motherfucking white!" he yells, taking a few steps towards him.
cody looks up and his face immediately falls. val's stomach squirms, he can tell this man knows exactly what he did wrong. in fact, cody takes off running, with val only a few steps behind him and jayden and noel on their tails. cody darts down an alley right as val catches up with him.
val starts swinging. from the outside, it's a fair fight. val is around 5'8, a few inches shorter and skinnier than cody, but god val's passion is unmatched. in this moment, he cares about no one more than angelica. his fist closes around cody's blue dominos uniform and his knuckles fly into cody's mouth.
moments later, he's bloodied and bruised (mostly from val, jayden and noel are pretty much there to make sure cody doesn't kill val and val doesn't kill cody.) and lying on the wet pavement below him.
