"and in another room, she drove herself to madness"

― witch with the power of descensum (au where she is persephone, or some other lover of hades; au where she is being haunted, or she is a ghost "hunter" who falls in love with a ghost - preferably in a mental institution or something)

― PECULIAR, DARK AND ECCENTRIC
sasi rhiannon slade has always been in touch with the darker walks of life. from a young age, she was submerged in death, even if she didn't know it yet, and that took its toll on her, albeit slowly. she isn't dark in the sense of evil, she just had a dark mind and tends to lean more towards dark colors and a darker way of thinking. she likes things like death and storms and blood, she loves darkness and finds it soothing. sasi is quite the odd witch at the academy, and upon first meeting her one would probably be a bit turned off, if only because of her dark clothing and intimidating approach to absolutely everything. sasi can be quite the strange one to someone who doesn't know her, to someone who doesn't see how truly special she is and how much she takes pride in the power she was given. sasi has accepted the fact that she is different, that she is, essentially, a witch of death and that not many people will find her appealing at first, maybe not at all. but she is okay with that, she likes her darkness along with the better parts of her.

― INTELLIGENT, SARCASTIC, AND CLEVER
when sasi first began to speak and show signs of her progressing from the newborn age, it was shown to her parents that she was to be a highly intelligent young girl. she has always been very bright, maybe not on the level of genius that some kids reach, but fairly high up there. she has always had a knack for history, possibly because history revolves around death more often than any other subject. but her favorite would have to be literature, because it is in literature in which stories revolving around death become romanticized and something so beautiful to sasi. before she learned of her power, she always saw death like normal people do, as sad and lonely and cold. but it could be so much more than that. it could be for love or to save someone's life, it could just very well be because your time on earth is done and its time to go back to where one came from. either way, both history and literature tug at her nerd heartstrings.

but not only is she smart, sasi is clever and sarcastic, meaning she's smart and she knows it (and uses it to her advantage). she isn't afraid to let people know when they are wrong and definitely is not afraid to run her mouth, seeming as she knows what she is talking about and isn't just mouthing off some random bullshit. sasi has a sharp tongue, she's blunt and brash, not bothering with sugar coating and making things easier on a person. if life was meant to easy, what was the point of living? if life was easy what beauty would there be in death? that is how she looks at things. her bright mind and sharp tongue make for the perfect combination of her becoming quite the clever young girl. she is sly and sneaky and is pretty well trained in getting out of sticky situations. if you have a problem, nine times out of ten sasi can figure a way out of it, much like a lawyer trying to find a loophole for their client.

BACKGROUND: [trigger warning: talk of death, suicide, and the holocaust] in the beginning light of dawn, on the bitterly cold fifteenth of november, in heidelberg, germany a little blonde haired, blue eyed child was born. except she was born barely breathing, on the brink of death. her skin was a sickly grey in color from lack of oxygen and her lips a pale blue. the tiny baby girl could barely even cry out from the pain she was in. on the other hand, it was all her parents were doing. annaliese belinda slade wept to the doctors, pleading to her ancestors and to whatever god was out there to bring back her baby, chanting something her mother used to whisper to her whenever she was ill. erik aleksandr slade was holding on tight to his wife, his teary eyes buried in the hollow of her neck.

baby sasi rhiannon slade, was slowly dying and when her eyes closed and her heart stopped, the room got scary quiet, so quiet one could almost hear her heart's last beat. and then the sun's gentle rays peeked into the old hospital in which she had been born and those brilliant wide eyes opened right up, skin going back to a natural pale ivory. her breathing slowly began to start back up and the whole room began to hum back to life, her parents wiping away their tears and sniffling away the blues, her doctors buzzing around her trying to take care of her.

that was her first encounter of many with death. unbeknownst to her parents at the time, their little girl was special. death had greeted her that early morning to bestow upon her a power, the power of being able to talk and see the dead, of being able to travel the netherlands of the dead. as she grew up, sasi got over her near death experience from when she was first born. she began to grow up strong and healthy, becoming a bit of a wild spirit.

her first, technically second, encounter with the dead happened when she was four. she was in her room playing with her many stuffed animals when one of them started to move on its own. the little blue eyed girl frowned, confused as to what was going on. a voice whispered to her, play. she grinned and told the voice to show itself and she would. for a four year old she had always been smart, an eloquent speaker as well, and she was fearless. things that went bump in the night excited her, and so did this new voice. the voice ended up showing his self, a small little boy with a fair olive complexion, a shaved head, golden brown eyes and odd looking clothes with stripes on them.

the boy's name was abraham, that was what he told her. and she played with him every day, always telling her parents about him. they just passed it off as an imaginary friend, but later down the road she would learn differently. as she got older, she learned the rich history behind abraham and the whole sadness behind why he was still around and what had truly happened to him. sasi was troubled by the torment his spirit had gone too and was unsettled by the history of the place she was born. she was twelve years old and had seen dozens of the same sort of ghosts as abraham, heard their sad stories and had played and befriended them. but it was like she was stuck in the 1940's and couldn't get out of it, it felt like she was really there living World War II.

annaliese and erik didn't truly understand why she desperately wanted to move, why she begged them to travel to the states so she could meet the rest of her family. but they did it anyway since they both could find better work and pay there. they were already american citizens, they had been both been born on us army bases. so they packed up and moved, but not before sasi's grandma, the one on her mother's side, told her that she was special, that in due time she would know who she was and thinks would make sense.

eventually she did learn who she was, just one short year later. her family had moved to north carolina and sasi began to wonder if she really had once been seeing ghosts or if she had had a vivid imagination. she started to believe that she had powers, that her grandmother was right. so she constantly wrote her to learn more about her history, learning of pagan ancestors and spells. sasi wasn't sure what exactly she was, she just knew that there was something about her. she understood that witches were real, but didn't want to believe she was one herself. she didn't want to be different, even when she knew she was.

and then her father passed away. he had always had a weak heart and it had finally took him from her. sasi was thirteen and finally flourishing in north carolina, trying to rid herself of the ghosts she had once seen, hoping it was just a phase that other young kids had gone through. but once she saw her father again, after she had just seen him take his last breath in a hospital, she knew she really did have a power, she knew she was a witch. when she first saw her dad, she was frightened. at first she thought she had died, and he thought the same. but he learned the truth about his daughter and tried to help her through it the best way he could, being dead and all.

he stuck around for a month and in that time sasi kept her little secret all to herself. her mother was going through a rough time and didn't need to hear that from her, that much sasi knew. but when her dad told her he had to pass on, the little blonde girl flipped. she didn't want to lose him a second time, so she told her mom and begged her to believe her, begged her to tell her dad to stay with them. but annaliese just ignored her, thinking her daughter had finally lost it.

so sasi was forced to shut up about her "powers" or her mother threatened to send her away. sasi knew her mom loved her and knew she was just deeply saddened so she got quiet. instead, she did her own research. she became obsessed with death and lore about it, she became the weird kid at school that always wore black and different crystal necklaces and always carried a book around. she was constantly singing creepy rhymes about death and she just scared people. but all she was doing was trying to come to terms with herself, trying to figure out who she was. she could still be funny and bright, could still be the same mouthy, rebellious, wild child she had always been. but people just tried to stay away from her after a while.

sasi was on the edge of sixteen when she became an orphan. her mother had never been the same after her father died, she had just grown darker and constantly stayed cooped up in her room. the past couple months before she died she had been writing her mom and warmed up a little bit more to sasi, making sure she knew how much her mother loved her, how much she had always loved her. and now sasi knew why she was doing that, she was saying goodbye in her own way. and soon sasi was at another funeral, dressed in her usual black and crying as she sang the hymns she had become so obsessed with. she hoped to see her mother one last time but somehow she knew she wasn't coming back. her mother had said her last goodbye when she hung that rope. her life was finished, she didn't have anything left for her here.

the young girl thought she would be sent to social services, that she'd be sent to house after house for the last two years of her adolescence. but when she got back to the empty house, her aunt was waiting for her with a suitcase and a letter. she didn't say a word as she got sasi in the car and drove her to louisiana. the letter explained everything, it was from her grandmother. it didn't explain why her mom killed herself, but it explained that she had finally accepted the truth about her daughter and had made plans for her to stay with a coven in new orleans. sasi was being sent to robichaux academy, a safe haven for young witches. she didn't really understand much and was still recovering from the loss of her mother when she got to her new home. she was taken in by cordelia and zoey and queenie and shown what she truly was. she is now seventeen and thriving in the home now that she has discovered and found who, and what, she truly is.
