"Welcome all to the 125th annual Hunger Games!" A bright, cheery voice echoes in the town center. It's like this every year, has been like this every year since the failed rebellion. Despite all attempts, the Hunger Games kept coming, and the districts haven't been cleared of their past sins.
"As you all know, this marks an exceptional year for the Hunger Games, the Quarter Quell!" The neon orange of this woman's wig hurts most of the crowd, even though they're too polite to admit it. District One is kind enough to the Capitol - the Career districts are still the Capitol's favorite pets to murder. "And now, let's see what the twist will be this year!" A box comes out, and a powder-pale hand reaches out to open it, a thin smile on the woman's face. "This year, to remember that both young and old, man and woman were lost during the Rebellion, names will be drawn from all members in a District!"
Silence falls over the district. The Capitol woman laughs nervously. Nobody joins in.
"We were told we'd be safe!" A woman comes to the front, curly black hair in her eyes as she fights off Peacekeepers, eyes focused dead on the Capitol woman.
"I'm afraid all bets are off for the Quarter Quell, my dear!" The Capitol woman says, a weak attempt of a sing-song voice with the words.
"Liar!" Shrill now, this woman is becoming hysterical. "I lost my brother to the Games, how dare you think it's okay to take me away from my family? I have children! Are you guys monsters? What are you - you're nothing better than mutts." She draws back her head, and spits towards the Capitol stage.
Boom.
The woman falls, blood seeping out of her forehead already. A Peacekeeper is setting down a weapon.
"Perhaps you've all forgotten how merciful the Capitol is to you. We protect you, for heaven's sakes." The woman is starting to relax.
"Now, let's get to it!"
She pulls a tablet out of her purse, smiling at everyone as she hooks it up to a wire, connecting it to the big screens around the town square.
"Our first tribute will be... Evan Harkness!"
A thin, tall boy gets pushed forwards, dark circles under his eyes. He doesn't look like he could make it.
"Our second tribute will be...." The woman looks downcast, and nobody has to hear her speak the name out loud - it's already on the screens.
Evangeline Harkness.
She's got the same dark circles as the teenage version, the same thin form. But there's something else about her, something.. stronger.
"Alistair Kearns!" A smirking young adult steps forwards, confident and sharp-eyed. "Adam Lacea." Another similarly confident young man. The two of them smile at each other, poison barely hidden in their eyes. They know each other well, and perhaps that's their greatest downfall.
"Daedalus Marconi!" A man in his 40s perhaps, fiddling with a wire. There's another sorrowful silence as his son Cato is called. "Another set of relatives, how fun!" Is the Capitol woman's only response.
Faulkner Frost, Lincoln Miyamoto - District 4's champions. Both are agile, both are swimmers. But neither one of them look like they really want a fight.
"Aiden Murphy, Suki Lawliet.." The woman is the one who stays calm. Aiden passes out on stage.
"Harrison Brightside, Daniel Summers!" The two of them seem to be friendly, but Harrison has a look in his eyes, as though he knows the younger, stronger District 6 Tribute will win.
"Devon Fenton, Beatrice Jackson." Both of them look dead already, but Devon seems to have already resigned to his fate. His face is pale, and Beatrice is attempting to smile.
"Ngozi Mkango and Alexis Kuryakin!" Big, strong men who don't smile at each other as they stand up. Terrifying seems to be their game, and they're winning.
"Teddy Morton, and .. Thorne Harkness!" Teddy is hugging what looks to be his daughter tightly, Peacekeepers have to force him away before he finally goes up on stage. Thorne has to be dragged, kicking and spitting curses. The third Harkness to be Reaped this year.
"Stanford Rivers.. and Ophelia Rivers." A uncle/niece duo, Stanford comfortably sets his arm around Ophelia. He whispers something into her ear, something among the lines of they'll kill me before they kill you. Uncle Stanford never breaks a promise.
An arrogant man and a frail, timid woman are next, Revali Medoh and Mipha va Ruta. They're childhood friends, and they claim to know Lincoln.
In District 12, there's a silence before the names are read aloud. "Colin DeWinter-" A shriek of pain comes from a mother who's about to lose the only living twin she has- "And Eloise Hanson!"
The Capitol woman smiles. "Panem, please celebrate your lives, and the lives of the newest Tributes of Panem!"
