when the car flipped, it seemed to be in slow motion. she’ll never forget the sound of crushing metal when the car landed back on the ground. then it was all still and quiet. willa didn’t process the crash, they were driving at one moment, the next she was hanging from her seatbelt.
she couldn’t see her brother, but he had to be okay, that was her big brother. â€Âjames,†she coughed, reaching up to feel her forehead. she brought her hand back down to look at it, blood covered her fingers. she felt relatively okay, though. but her brother never responded.
a face appeared in the small window where she could still see out of the car, “we’re going to get you out of there, okay?†he said, willa nodded, â€Âmy brother’s in here too, he was driving,†she managed. the man stopped a sigh, “okay,†he said after some hesitation.
they pulled the young girl out of the wreckage some time later, she had some scratches and her legs were in pain, but otherwise okay. she looked around, not seeing any familiar faces. â€Âwhere is he?†she asked, a bit frantic and going around the car. someone tried to stop her, “um you don’t want to go over there,†they warned, but willa shook her head, â€Âwhere’s my brother?†she asked more intently this time and pushing past the woman.
blood had pooled on the cement, they had just pulled james’ body out of the car. willa barely recognized her brother. her face dropped and she let out a scream. â€Âno, no, no, no,†she cried, covering her face.
she didn’t know he was drunk.
