Things were bad, but things were always bad; John hadn't known peace since before he'd gotten thrown in jail. And that peace was long gone; the thought of even trying to go back was laughable. He wasn't the person he'd been, he was colder and more vicious; his old silver tongue had turned into a razorblade.
And his new self caused nothing but trouble for everybody around him, and eventually that trouble turned against him. His head still hurt from being smashed into the concrete, and bruises littered his arms and legs from when he'd been thrown to the ground.
He was sore as hell and wasn't in the mood to spend any time with the people he disliked. Although he looked back and knew he deserved the beating, it didn't mean he was going to apologize for what he'd done and said; he still strongly felt as though Mettaton was an enemy. A villain. Not worthy of being treated like John would treat any other human.
He tried to cover up as much as possible; snatching a nice coat from a dead worm and using it to cover the bright orange shirt he still had yet to replace. He was also wearing his cloak, as was the normal for the hunter; there wasn't anywhere private enough to stash it without coming back and finding it stolen, so he had to wear it even if he was trying to be lowkey.
He didn't want to run into Mettaton again; he didn't know if the dude was still out for blood or not. He was scared of getting killed off, especially by Metta's hands. He wanted an honorable death, not being beaten into a bloody pulp in some back alley.
