my cat alice was similar to that, her family was attacked and killed by a pit bull, she was the only one left alive. my ex-best friend (best way i can describe it, since he's been an asshole to me over something dumb,) were really rough and nasty with her as a kitten so she's pretty cold and distant now. I love her but she's a pain in the butt sometimes - and if we hadn't adopted her, i imagine she would have either been A: still with his family, or b: put down somewhere, so... I'm glad she's with us.
