In this new world they all lived in, many old traditions became trivial and forgotten; not for Rudolf. He had started keeping a notebook filled with the various celebrations - holidays, birthdays, even just celebrations for their own little group. He kept a calendar updated, afraid that the lack of power would leave them almost stranded in time. Each day he cross referenced the notebook and calendar, looking for something to celebrate. And today, there was a birthday.
He had been there to watch the young girl grow for several years, and each year he tried to make her birthday feel special. This year was no different. As Rudolf approached Dahlia, he marveled at her green thumb. How wonderful it must be to be able to maintain the life of plants in this climate. Lightly tapping her shoulder, he gave her a big smile and sat down his present; it was a gardening book he'd found at the back of the library when he had cleaned through it. "Happy birthday!" he spoke and signed with his good arm.
