Her words had merely been his blessing.

He would spend the next day with her: gently, delicately. What little he could do to fend off the ache, to temporarily bring a sparkle back to her, he did. But it wasn’t enough. Not for Jasper, at least. The scales were imbalanced, and that night he sought to right them.

And now, his victim, her abuser, was seated mere feet from the executioner. His radio, precious thing, continued on schedule, blaring an upbeat 80’s song likely from his prime years. It was clear he showed no remorse for the incident that had taken place just the other night. A blood stain still marked the corner of the rug. Jasper’s jaw tightened.

He lurked in the archway of the entry hall, cloaked in the lightless shadows of the night. He was unmoving stone, staring blankly through his mask at the man sunken into the couch. The light of a battery powered lantern illuminated him faintly from the coffee table, casting an eerie scene.

The click of his knife opening alerted the man during a pause in the beat, and he turned suddenly, staring at the masked teen behind him. He hurried to his feet, still staring at the intruder, his eyes wide with fear.

”Who are you?” The elder demanded, taking a cautious step back, the back of his legs meeting the table’s edge.

Jasper cocked his head slowly to the side, smiling behind the mask.

”Don’t you recognize me, Mike?”

The man turned and ran towards the kitchen, and so mimicked Jasper. Mike flew towards the countertop, desperately reaching for the butcher knife from the wooden block. He whipped around, and suddenly his fingers seared as they were sliced nearly completely off by Jasper’s polished blade. He raised his trembling hand, his fingers held only by tendons, swaying sickly with his tremors.

Jasper grasped the man by his shirt’s collar, swinging him around and shoving him to the kitchen floor. The hard tile met the man’s back, his head cracking against the floor. His vision blurred for a moment.

”Get up.” Jasper spoke coldly, flatly, standing over the man.

He remained on the floor, his chest tight with panic and confusion. Mike tried feebly to scoot himself away from his attacker, scrambling back towards the kitchen wall. A heavy boot suddenly came upon his knee, bashing it against the floor, and a guttural cry erupted from the man. He screamed out in pain, face contorted with horror, clutching his thigh.

”I said get up!” Jasper shouted violently.

The man cried in fear and pain, shaking his head quickly, the pain still searing through his leg. But Jasper did not take kindly to no’s. He pulled the pistol from the back of his black jeans, unlocking it and pointing it at the man’s forehead. Mike sobbed again in fear, but he slowly complied, sitting forwards and clutching his leg again in pain. He shook his head again. ”I can’t!” He pleaded.

”I don’t give a shit, old man. Get the fuck up.” He spat.

A burning pain shot through the man as he attempted to do so, his hands clutching the wall as he dragged himself upwards. But the pain became too much, and he slid down the wall heavily, his breath ragged from the struggle. He shook his head once more, slowly, defeatedly.

”I can’t- I can’t-“ Mike begged.

”Fine. I’ll make you.”

Jasper slipped the gun into his waistband again, reaching forward to grab the man from under his arms, dragging the elder back into the dimly lit living room. Mike fought him little, too fixated on minimizing the pain from his shattered knee as his legs dragged across the household. He landed with a soft thud upon the edge of the rug, his breath trembling. Jasper knelt down beside the man, his forearm propped upon his knee, still holding the bloodied knife. With his other hand, he shoved the man’s head against the rug, forcing him to look at Rosie’s bloodstain.

”You know why I’m here, don’t you?”

Mike sobbed, eyes squeezing shut. ”It was an accident! She knows that! I didn’t mean-“

”Shut up!” Jasper yelled. ”I can’t listen to your sad fucking voice. You don’t see the wrongs of your actions, old man? Fine. l’ll make you see them.”

Jasper grasped the man by his throat and suddenly loomed atop him, using his knees to pin down the man’s forearms. Knife in hand, he squeezed the man’s chin with his other, holding him in place. Suddenly, the knife came down, squelching wetly into the man’s left eye. A piercing scream came from him as he thrashed under his attacker. Jasper struggled to keep the man pinned down under him, shifting to apply more weight to his arms. He continued to grasp the man’s chin to hold him still.

”Stop being so fucking difficult!” Jasper chimed, mimicking the man’s words from the night of Rosie’s attack.

The music continued on as the elder screamed in agony, writhing under the teen. Dark crimson flowed from his eye, running down his cheek and onto the rug, creating a new stain.

”Are you thinking of her?” Jasper crooned, tracing the blade against his cheek as the man below him cried in pain.

”But she’s not the only one, is she?” He whispered, moving the knife to Mike’s neck, pressing ever so slightly into his skin.

”I know about that little family secret too, Uncle Mike.” The man continued sobbing, his remaining eye looking up at Jasper pleadingly. ”I’ll do it better, though.”

He ripped through the man’s throat with the knife, blood spraying onto the teen as he grunted with the force. The man choked and began to gurgle violently, his eye rolling back into his head. His body shook with shock as he slowly died underneath the teen, who stared intently.

He would bury the man’s body later in the night at the Ripmourne cemetery in an unmarked, shallow grave. The Porter residence had been cleaned all but for the new, larger stain on the living room rug, and the music from the radio continued to blare from the house, all through the night.
