[align=center][div style="width: 450px; text-align: justify; font-family: arial; font-size: 9pt;"]Despite what La Dama thinks, Marco is no stray dog. He is not lost, thought it most likely seemed that way upon first meeting her. He left on his own, determined to be independent. Being the burden someone must bear is a burden within itself; he is a strain upon those with too many mouths to feed already, which is why he left the lodge in the first place.

He wants to be on his own, like before, but for some reason there seems to be a bright neon sign above his head spelling out LEGAL OBLIGATION. Is it that obvious? he wonders. His body may be all messed up, but he insists he’s still all there. Well, he hopes so. He had assumed it would heal in time, but it’s been nearly a year and he’s made no progress. Part of him is convinced he’s only gotten worse.

He met La Dama in the winding streets, calling out for someone. It was so curious that he had to stop in his tracks and watch for a minute--he would have been content to continue on his merry little way had she not noticed him and immediately and forcibly taken him under her wing. One can only insist ”estoy bien” so many times without result until it’s pointless to try anymore. So he lets her drag him to wherever she’s going, stumbling over his own feet in an attempt to keep up while on her leash.

Now, he grows tired of it. The sharp pang of hunger has given way to irritation--he would have snapped at her by now if he had the words for it.

”Oye, suéltame!” Marco whines, weakly attempting to tug his arm free from La Dama’s ever-tight grip. She doesn’t need to drag him around like a cat on a leash; he can walk just fine on his own. He would even say that she’s making it more difficult.

He’s been so focused on trying to free himself from her vice grip that he hasn’t noticed the change in surrounding. It’s the sudden smell of the sea on the wind that makes him look up and take it all in, with some hint of confusion mixed with surprise. Marco had no clue they were so close to the ocean.

What a pleasant surprise.

When La Dama starts to slow, he finally manages to wrench his wrist from her hand. The force he exerts makes him wobble, and, lacking the balance to keep upright, he ends up falling flat on his ass in the gravel.

”Rathole,” he repeats to himself, wondering what she could possibly mean by that. While Olga sees yet another crumbling dump, Marco is actually very much reminded of his old home. He can find some comfort in that.

”...what are we doing here?” If La Dama ever told him why they were traveling so far, he either wasn’t listening or just can’t remember ... in all likelihood, it’s probably a mixture of both.

A rathole full of goths, dumpster children playing hopscotch over barbed wire, and gunshots ringing out through the night as if the sound mattered to the people of the Badlands. To be fair, in civilization terms they weren't that bad; they had a government, sort of, and a military which was made up of everybody since everybody had weapons and was willing to fight for their home, if need be.

Salem had certainly lived under worse conditions. But yeah, he'd lived it up out on the ocean for most of his life so maybe his opinion was null and void. He'd certainly take a ship full of disgusting pirates over this hellhole any day, not that he'd mention that to anybody; Cat was only starting to come around to the idea that he held some loyalty to this place, he didn't want to dispute that.

Presently, he was chilling on the outskirts of town keeping an eye on the people meandering about and smoking. It was a good place if you wanted to people-watch and not get bothered, though everybody was fucking boring around here. He wished Cat or Addy were here, hell he'd take Lucerne's completely serious burns right about now. But all he had were these idiots, and oh jeez here came too more.

The woman seemed to be pulling the boy along by his arm, which did not seem comfortable for either of them; it'd be funny if he wasn't immediately suspicious. They didn't seem like they belonged, by the way the woman gripped her wrench defensively. And neither of them had necklaces either, so they were definitely outsiders.

"Hey, scatter. Unless you've got business you best get on your way before someone less lenient comes along." Salem called out, standing up and stretching his arms above his head in a lazy, catlike way. The strangers had caught the attention of the smokers now, but they seemed content enough to let the Councilman deal with it.

[align=center][div style="width: 450px; text-align: justify; font-family: arial; font-size: 9pt;"]La Dama outstretches her hand for him to take, and for a moment, he just stares at it with a curled lip. He takes it, of course, purely out of respect for his elders--that and the fact that it would be more humiliating to try and get up on his own than to just accept her help. However, as soon as he’s stable and upright, he snatches his hand away as quick as he possibly can, rubbing it as though touching her burned.

Room and board, she says.

”We have to pay?” he asks, sticking a hand in his pocket only to pull out a handful of miscellaneous, most definitely worthless crap, buried and entangled in a whole lot of pocket lint. He’s got nothing to trade for the hospitality of these … thugs. There may be something in his backpack if he really looks, but there’s most likely not much in there other than his violin--and there’s no way in hell he’ll ever give that up, not even if they try to pry it from his cold, blue hands.

Salem’s arrival puts him more on edge, but again, he’s got nothing to defend himself. La Dama, on the other hand, looks as though she may go berzerk at any moment. For such a short woman, she sure instills fear deep in his heart, wielding that pipe like it’s fatal.

He shakes like a leaf, trying his hardest to hide behind her, despite being nearly a full head taller.

Marco says nothing. La Dama can handle it … or so he hopes.

They know that the Badlands has a reputation. People can be told the name and nothing else and start conjuring a place where society's worst gather in buildings that over time nature is reclaiming. Name a place bad, and that's how people will consider it without knowing anything else. But then you find out that everyone there is armed with both weapons and a sour attitude, that they aren't afraid to take everything they want and need and wreck whatever they don't... Then the rumors really start to spread. Then the victims spoke out, and if they weren't monsters before...

And Cat's okay with that. That's sort of what drew them to this place, and they think that's what others were drawn to too. The apocalypse made a lot of people do a lot of things they never would have before, but not everyone strayed from their moral center. Not everyone accepted the violence. But once the seal was broken, the ones that would do anything to survive would be the ones that did. And the people of the Badlands would do anything to survive.

"Nope, haven't seen her. And no, you don't have to pay." Cat said, approaching the scene with their hands tucked away into their pockets. Casual, unconcerned, but pale blue eyes keenly aware of the crowbar gripped tightly in the woman's hand. "It's not exactly free, but you don't gotta pay." They halted next to Salem and raised an eyebrow. "Who are you?"

[align=center][div style="width: 450px; text-align: justify; font-family: arial; font-size: 9pt;"]One might consider Marco lucky to have never even heard of the Badlands. Then again, he hasn't heard much of anything ... most things slip his mind nowadays. If Olga has mentioned this place prior to ten minutes ago, he's most likely forgotten. Things just don't stick anymore.

"Rathole" may not fully cover the extent of their reputation. He's probably better off not knowing.

Anything makes him jump now, to the point where the old Marco would have been so ashamed. He's a large man, and in theory he should be able to take anything that comes his way--but the slow, clunky way he moves, as if struggling against imaginary restrains, hinders him so much that even despite his size, he's an obviously easy target. So there he stands, cowering pathetically behind an old woman half his size, folded into himself like he expects to be attacked at any moment.

He supposes that now he has good reason to be nervous, standing in foreign territory, surrounded by what look like a sure dandy bunch. He's not so intimidated by Salem as he is Catalyst, though both of them are a full head taller than himself and adorned in just about every body modification he can name; which, to him, makes it clear what kind of people they are. Thugs, he would call them. Edgy, unkempt thugs.

Captain Litvinenko. Oh, so that's her name. All this time, he's been too embarrassed to ask. Though he doubts he'll remember it again; La Dama works just fine (though he only refers to her as that out of respect for the elderly and not because she is truly anything elegant.)

"Drop off?" he repeats, puzzled. All this time spent travelling together, hand-in-hand, and she's going to leave, just like that? Sure, he's been vying for independence the entire time, but now that it's really come down to it, he's not so sure he wants to be alone.

His brow furrows, and though both hands twitch and shake, he can only curl one into a loose fist. Did she purposely take him to this place to dump him like unwanted trash? Oh, God only knows what they'll do to a man like him. She's leaving him for dead! These people will eat him alive.

"You are just leaving me here?"

He hopes his upturned eyes and quivering lip make her feel guilty. Marco doesn't have the words to properly express himself, so he just thinks his anger and hurt at her, hoping that she'll get the message via telepathic brain waves ... or something like that.

Laws, governmental regulations, Salem had been just a child when those had applied to him. He probably would've had a good life if the power hadn't gone out; he would've graduated a bunch of fancy schools his parents paid for him to attend - since his grades were mediocre at best - and would've became a regional manager of some stupid web company, vying with his coworkers for a promotion or a raise.

Salem much preferred it this way. This life humbled people, made them less annoying; book smarts didn't matter as much anymore, and if you had em then you're probably on someone's hit-list for one reason or another. And he could walk around like a dirty hippy without anybody batting an eye, since most folks knew better than to step to him.

"Can't say I've seen anyone of that description either." Salem said, hooking his fingers around his belt and rocking back and forth on his heels. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Catalyst had appeared, coalescing out of the shadows or whatever the fuck their leader did in order to be everywhere at once.

His brow twitched at the woman's introduction. Another captain? She didn't seem like the seafaring type, but maybe she meant it in like, military terms. She was plenty old enough to have been in the military, back when the world cared about such things as nations. "Olga it is." He hummed. Only Cat was worthy of being a captain in his eyes now, and it was mainly because Cat didn't seem to care for the nickname.

Oh jesus, she was just gonna drop this dude off here? He looked like he was about to cry, and he'd been cowering behind her the entire time. "Yeah, he's gonna get torn apart. This is a pretty sick prank if you hate him." Salem commented offhandedly, taking a few strides forward to flank them and get a better look at Marco.

"We'll take him, can't promise he'll be here if you come back for him." Salem said, turning his quizzical gaze back onto Olga. If she was fine with leaving her cowering friend in the hands of a bunch of violent strangers, then he wouldn't stop her.

Cat silently watched the interaction with narrowed eyes. There was something distinctly not right about this situation, but they couldn't quite put their finger on it. Was there something wrong with Marco, or was Olga just a bitch? Maybe both were true.

"We aren't a babysitting service." They said bluntly, crossing their arms. "We take care of kids if they come along, but they still gotta pull their weight. No one here gets a free ride." The more people that were there, the less any one person had to contribute... provided everyone worked together. Even the kids had to be able to learn. If you couldn't take care of yourself, and you had no one that cared enough to look after you, it was easy to get left behind.

As much as they might hate to admit it, they agreed with Salem. This Marco guy didn't look much like Badlands material... "This is the Badlands. Overkill might as well be in the fugging name." They walked forward, going past Olga to get a better look at Marco. "Stand up straight." They ordered, wanting to get a sense of the man that wasn't controlled by the woman that seemed so eager to get rid of him.

//ic opinions !! Cat might have reservations but I sure don't rtgh

Marco bites the inside of his cheek. It’s a precautionary measure, something to stay grounded, because if he doesn’t stay down to earth, he’ll explode.

All the words pile up on the tip of his tongue. He can try and try with all his might, but there’s just no way to get the words out--not in the right order, not with the right tone, and certainly not with the right meaning. There’s nothing he can do short of catching her jaw with his fist; and even then he’s uncertain she’ll understand how he feels. If he can maneuver his useless arms enough to even hit her, his punch would be weak and she’d most likely have ample time to react and send him toppling to the ground again.

Marco’s mouth is open and flopping like a fish gasping for air, but what comes out are jumbled, fragmented sentences. They’re coherent enough to the point one can understand if they take a moment to decipher, but have no weight behind them, a bunch of you are so’s and I can’t’s and this isn’t my fault’s. His hands don’t even clench into proper fists. His inability to speak just leads to more frustration which turns into pure anger, but all he can do is stand there and let it stew.

Olga clearly doesn’t care in the first place.

Neither should he, but--but she has dragged him so far from home, thinking she did him a favor. He was fine on his own; he insisted upon first meeting her that he didn’t need her charity. If this is some backwards attempt to come off as a good person, it hasn’t worked. Marco is nowhere near where he needs to be now.

Salem feeding into his delusions and Olga getting annoyed right back at him only adds to his bad mood.

”You--you can’t just … just … l--ugh! It’s hopeless.

The most he can do is groan his frustration out, dragging a hand down his face like sludge.

He doesn’t need her help, but it’s nice to have company. Despite how high-and-mighty she acts towards him, like some merciful god, he enjoyed having someone at his side. She had been less insufferable when she was dragging him silently down the coast.

When she turns to him again, making some half-hearted attempt to calm his nerves, he just huffs and crosses his arms over his chest, refusing to look at her. Boy, Catalyst’s boots sure are interesting.

Marco straightens out as Catalyst commands, but when they step closer, he takes a clumsy step back, holding his hands out as a warning of sorts.

don’tcomenearmedon’ttouchmedon’tcomenearmedon’ttouchme

He supposes there’s no choice but to stay. He can’t make another trip like that … he has a hard enough time moving as it is. Whatever they expect him to do, he can manage (God forbid any of these people try to offer him a handicap.)

”I can work,” he mumbles. "Nothing wrong with me."

He moves away from them, holds up his hands. They pause, taking the hint well enough, though their piercing gaze is still locked on him. He listened, a good sign, then finally spoke out in defense of himself, an even better one.

Cat was someone that was always interested in the individual. What their peers thought of them was often telling (of both the person speaking and being spoken of), and they'd always be interested to hear it. But what came from the individual themself, their words and their actions, that was almost always - if not always - more important and held more weight.

"What are you good at? We play to our strengths here; not everyone's a killer but killing's not the only thing that needs doing." That was only an example, but it was true. It seemed stupid to force people to do things they weren't skilled at when they could be more useful doing something else.
