to most people, Brendan May come off as cold or standoffish or passive aggressive or...whatever, but in all honesty he isn’t entirely like that. Sure, he heavily enjoys throwing up a closed-off persona, as it makes him feel way more safe than sorry, but he does have a nice side; the soft part of him is just hard to——reveal, he guesses. And honestly, who could reasonably blame him? With all of the trauma that’s happened to him, and all of the broken off bonds and relationships, his mind has been convinced that it makes complete sense for him to withdraw back into a tiny little hermit shell, closed off from...well, pretty much everyone.

Plus, in his opinion relationships must take a lot of time to build, and therefore most people won’t receive the good tidbits of his personality easily. (...wait, does that make sense? He has no clue, but let’s roll with it anyways.)

Well, no matter the case, it’s very, very challenging for people to get close to Brendan—simple. Heck, there’s only one actual person in the lodge who he’s somewhat bonded with, Hayley, and even then it’s not like they’re buddies or whatever. They just...he doesn’t know, they just get each other or something. At this point in time, she’s the only one that knows about the crap that has happened to him when he was younger, and he’s planning on keeping it that way. And——now that he thinks about it, there is someone else he’s somewhat close with: hope.

Funnily enough, Brendan happens to be babysitting the little thing right now, sitting crisscross applesauce in the nursery with hope in his lap. (It’s worth noting that he also has the three chicks with him, but they’re wandering about at the moment.) anyways, hope is currently fiddling with some...white wooden thingamabob that Jackson made for her; while Brendan can’t for the life of him figure out what the heck it’s supposed to be (all he knows is that it’s a toy of some sort), it’s enough for hope to merrily play with it.

"oops," he idly comments as hope drops the toy; "here ya go." lifting it up, he hands it back to the child, giggling a teensy tiny bit as she almost immediately puts it in her mouth. "noooo hope, that’s gross!"

Gingerly tugging on the toy and ushering it out of her mouth, Brendan exhales softly, allowing the kid to put the object in her hands this time. However, within just a few moments she is fascinated by something else: the three chicks pecking away at Brendan’s toes. A soft smile tugging at the corners of his lips, Brendan scoops up one of the chicks and shows her to hope, but as the infant quickly reaches out he lifts the chicken out of reach.

"be gentle," he lightly scolds, a single arm wrapped around the kid so he doesn’t risk the chance of her going after the chick (he doubts she will, but it’s a necessary precaution). "this is sunny, though. Isn’t she cute?"

Little does Brendan know, his walkie-talkie has been on the entire time, recording the interaction with hope and broadcasting it to everyone in flintlock who just-so happens to have a walkie-talkie from the meeting. Whoops.

(( got this idea from Van dkfjfkvm && while only people who have walkie-talkies heard the entire thing you can have your peep walk in ofc ))

[align=center][div style="width: 375px; text-align: justify; font-family: verdana; font-size: 7pt; line-height: 1.5;"]・゚✧ — Although Ellie had not spoken to Brendan very much during her time at the Lodge, something about him made her think that he was a very closed off soul. And, that was okay. She didn’t think that she’d actually manage to get much of a conversation out of him if she were to start talking to him, but that thought didn’t seem to put her off enjoying Brendan’s company. He was a sweet boy, and Ellie could see that he had a golden heart. She could appreciate the bond that he shared between his chickens, much like the bond that she shared between her horses But honestly, Ellie never expected to ever experience Brendan share any affection towards any other being apart from the feathered variety.

She was busy mucking out the stables, hair tied up in a messy bun and beads of sweat dripping down the side of her face as she worked hard to clean the barn up. She’d created a muck heap around the back, hoping that it could be good compost for the crops when spring and summer rolled by. She hoped that perhaps Hayley would appreciate Ellie’s little innovation; the blonde was doing all that she could to prove herself to her friend. The pitchfork was almost dropped from her grip as the walkie talkie resounded throughout the barn, Ringo throwing his head up and making Ellie flinch as she glanced over her shoulder. Soft eyes wandered towards the walkie talkie and then… A slow grin grew to her lips.

”Here ya go… Nooo Hope, that’s gross!” Baby talk and Brendan were two words that Ellie never expected to pass through her mind one after the other, but she found it absolutely adorable. A short cackle passed Ellie’s lips as she leaned the pitchfork against the stable wall, patting Ringo’s shoulder as she passed and left the stall before she picked up the walkie talkie. She held it close to her face, grinning into the small device as she waited for a moment of silence to click the button and - ”Oh Bren, baby Hope is cute, isn’t she?” And with that, she began to giggle to herself, realising that perhaps Brendan would potentially take this seriously when all Ellie thought was that it was adorable.

She was once in the same boat as him. Growing up, Ellie was incredibly socially awkward and timid, and socialising was a difficult thing to do. Animals and babies seemed to be the only creatures that she could truly resonate with, and so she couldn’t blame the boy for acting the same way that she did those fourteen years ago. It was an introvert thing, she supposed.

If there's one thing that Dallas has pretty much never been, it's isolated. Coming from a huge family, it was harder to get alone-time than people to talk to. That suited her quite well, as she was a very social person that liked being around her fellow humans. Even though she didn't quite want to be here, she was still glad that there were a lot of people at the Lodge. As much as she loved her brother, he wasn't the sort of person that could keep her entertained all the time. No, he was the type to tell her to stop whatever she was doing without offering anything fun as an alternative.

She'd been walking down the hall when she saw August (that was their name, right? She wasn't entirely sure, since she'd only seen them around here and there and hadn't spoken to them directly yet. Hmm, she should do that) go into a room. She glanced through the doorway as she passed, surprised to see Brendan, a baby, and two - no three - baby chicks running around. Truth be told, he had made a pretty poor impression on Dallas when she first met him, and though she tried not to judge people by first impressions, some part of her just... didn't like him. Well hey, the babies seemed to like him, so maybe he wasn't all bad.

One of the chicks was starting to wander close to the open door, so Dallas crouched down and made a little barricade with her hands so that it couldn't escape. After trying a couple times to get around her, it started going back into the room. "The chicks are cute. So's the baby. Is that your sister?"

Despite how standoffish the boy had first appeared and the general rustiness of their first encounter, August could not help but feel a strange sort of attachment to Brendan that they could not seem to understand the root of. The kid was practically the first human being they had ever seen other than their parents, the first real life, physical human since they had seen many in photographs and books. August had spent their life hidden way in a cave watching the shadows cast by humanity, tricked into believing those silhouettes and figurines as truth, but now outside that cave and into the light, Brendan was the first human being August had ever seen that was not plainly a copy onto a two-dimensional plane. Perhaps the boy was not the most approachable, and perhaps August did not really answer all he had asked when they were first found which certainly did not help, but the newcomer still felt like they had to know this first introduction to humanity.

August had been spending a lot of their time just simply... Living. Indulging in what society had to offer. After mama and baba died, they had been in pure isolation, it was necessary for the moral to go back into the social life of human beings. They spent their time meeting the many folks of Flintlock, exploring the territory they inhabitant, meeting the many livestock that took shelter with them and discovering new technologies, things that they only knew from books and stories now true. As exciting it might have been to suddenly be exposed to the new world, it was overwhelming as well to be struck with the reality that they had known so little for so long.

It was... A conflicting situation, but August was pushing through.

After a day out in the field with the horses and farm animals, August entered the lodge for some down-time, taking off whatever heavy gear and outerwear they had carried on them to brace the weather to then fall into the comfort of indoor temperatures shielded away from wind and cold. Now they just... Wanted a quiet spot to sit and think. Maybe even nap, so they started to hover through hallways, peeking into rooms and lobbies, looking for a place that seemed untouched, eventually making their way to the nursery, where they heard the familiar pitch of Brendan. The knuckles of their calloused fingers began pushing against the door to press it open as they were drawn into the conversation he was having, seemingly with himself, peeking inside only to see the boy surrounded by a few chicks and a... doll? Oh wait. It moved. It was alive. Now they were intrigued by this new creature.
[color=#7989A2][b]"What's that?" August would question with a wide-eyed stare, a finger pointing at the child he was handling before they would crouch down, lowering that finger out to the little chicks to see if they were friendly.

COLA WITH THE BURNT OUT TASTE

THERE'LL NEVER BE ENOUGH OF US

August was very obviously not the most socially aware individual, in fact, they were hardly socially experienced at all, but even with their limited interactions between the only two human beings they have ever known in the last nineteen years, they knew [i]exactly what aggression sounded like. They knew that this boy was displaying it as he stood defensively between them and the baby, - who's name was Hope apparently - and practically snapped his responses over like a cornered viper lashing at it unholy offender. The way those words landed made August reactively flinch away as if a rubber band had whipped itself across the flesh of their extended hand. They stood up abruptly from their crouch and quickly backed up, holding their own hand with a submissive dip of their head, eyes resting on their feet for a moment as they would shuffle sheepishly in a guilty stance.
[b][color=#7989A2]"Ah, sorry..." They'd mutter in an awfully quiet pitch before their eyes lifted as the sound of a slightly mechanic voice rose in the air, a strange sort of static running in the background of the sound, causing August's brows to furrow in confusion. No one else was in the room, why was there a voice? They could've sworn it came from inside the room.
"Who was that?" They would suddenly ask, whipping their head over to look at every corner of the room in avid confusion, their frantic searching stopping as Dallas was now standing at the mouth of the room. They backed away from that door now, stepping aside so they wouldn't get any closer to Brendan as they did so, their head shooting over to little baby Hope as she was mentioned, offering a quick smile towards the little being before looking right back over at Dallas. "Her name is Hope." They would inform the woman before they would crouch down again, wrapping their muscular working arms overtop their tucked knees to rest their chin upon their forearms as they quietly observed.
