concept - i dont think the idea that i had before was great. maybe the group has more spartan influences and i think the poison in his system will slowly drive quietus to showing his aggressive side more frequently, which will lead to it becoming villainous, in a way.

i think at first quietus will be against the other concepts that people have been speaking up about and instead try to form a group of his own based off of what his morals are: surviving. it'll be rag-tag, but i eventually want him to have this total arc of his character where he meets these people he'd known and he's like... fuck, i'm going to have to fight them one day. and it surprises him how much he feels from that, that little pang of sadness, and it just grounds him further into this perpetual mood of duty, because that's what the group is going to be, duty.

i think in the oddest sense quietus does have some notable morals besides breathing, but he isn't a good person, no matter how apathetic / caring he can be depending on the day. a lot of that will come from the behavior he'd been victim to from his father during his childhood dripping into how he treats those around him, and because his breed of dog is popular for being wild in nature and protecting flocks of sheep, he'll do anything to protect the people that back him up, even if it means doing some really shitty things that fuck with his head.

when i see him leading a group i see him not really wanting to, but going along with it anyways - he isn't going to complain, because this was his idea and he needs to own up to it. he's a little shaky at first, and doubts himself, but he manages to get back on his paws and treat everyone respectfully. he doesn't cause unnecessary conflict but when people do try to turn on him, he's quick to punish them.

i do really want to include the monarchy thing into this idea. maybe he has kids with someone and that's what starts it? I don't think he'd delude himself with visions of him being higher than others, but he'd be more comfortable with giving the power down to a son/daughter.

i think something rlly cool would be to have an older member / his right-hand man, or smthn, to always watch over and rule as a substitute king until their heir is old enough to step up (which would be 20 moons, aprox.). during that time the heir would learn how to carry on as king and repeat the cycle.

the heir would be chosen by the group as a whole, not just the leader.

i need to weave their culture into their territory a little bit more, though. maybe they aren't religious in any way (maybe practicing it is forbidden? because it's seen as unethical), but they have great respect for wildlife and that leads to them greatly honoring the healers that they have, placing them in a position of utmost authority that gets them a shit ton of respect.

they could have a rule that healers / ppl who practice medicine, from no matter what group, are welcomed there, or at least treated with respect and not savagery.

they wouldnt tell them their secrets or some shit but yknow.

and soldiers/warriors/knights are held in great esteem and that old chivalry aspect is in again.

i really want to make something unique and captivating but this all feels so boring and overused.

also what alpha said is actually a really good idea - they could have a monarchy, but if another person thinks that they can become leader or deserve a certain position, they need to fight it out. i think they'll have a measure of disdain for the weak, and will put an emphasis on being physically fit and mentally sound to some degree in order to ensure excellent fighting form, and have a habit of coming up with extravagant strategies to take out their enemies. it'll be odd bc!! quietus rn is very attentive to the weak and dotes over them like a momma bird, but over time he'll just come to value power - not in the political sense - instead of lazing around. especially because he'll work very hard to keep everyone well fed and in his eyes after all he's done that's no excuse to show weakness.

i think nerdy/shy characters will be outsiders here, which can lead to conflicts with other groups. they don't need numbers on their side. they need luck, strength, and willpower. maybe that's their motto? "Luck, strength, and willpower - LSaW"; they won't be dumb at all be qu is actually pretty smart but they aren't going to be geeking out on some bullshit. so soft pacifistic characters will virtually be a sore thumb in their community, and quietus wouldn't be very appreciative of them later on unless they provided an actual use.

i think that's something he's going to be big on. he won't have an auto-acceptance policy. he's going to have to manually allow people in, but he won't actually make them members, and they won't be able to partake in meetings or anything too inside-y like trainings until they do something to prove their worth, like some great heroic act or something that can impress the leader. if they fail to do this, then they're kicked out. quietus isn't stupid enough to let them get too much information to spread around.

also, newcomers will have to take the antidote until they're able to develop immunity through slowly allowing the poisons once they're accepted. the antidote will be in abundance as a result (they live on an island - maybe the milk from the coconut does something to help them? mixed with ounces of poison from a particular plant?) but will be heavily guarded.

also, all leaders have to write out - in detail - their reign. it's up to healers to document them and keep everything in track by working alongside the leader, but you get the idea.

like in ancient china, the people will have the right to revolt and overthrow the current leader if they become to worrisome, and be replaced by an elective from the community itself.

i really want to start delving into my own characters more, so the next fanfiction i do is going to be a solas/michaela one. maybe just revisiting their scenes together, delving into some fluff, perhaps some smut, and then some.
