Flicking ashes from the end of his cigarette, Hancock dropped his hand to his side and stared out across the lands surrounding the lodge. Through his years of wandering around from settlement to settlement, there'd always been someone who asked why he was how he was, and why he fucked himself up even further with the cigarettes and the drugs and the alcohol. Maybe they didn't say it in those exact words, but that was the gist of it, and by now, he thought he'd have a more definitive answer, one that wasn't so entangled between pleasure and punishment. On the one hand, getting high? That was one of the few good things in this world. On the other, screwing himself over was for the sake of a twisted path to redemption, as though he'd ever reach the end of it. Sooner or later, karma would finish her job; until then, he took another drag from the cigarette and watched the smoke billow away. No point in worrying about it or jumping at shadows.

Glancing over at the sound of footsteps, he couldn't say he was surprised to see Jack there, but honestly he hadn't been expecting anyone in the first place. He supposed he should've pegged him as a smoker the first time he'd seen him- Hancock didn't have a sixth sense for fellow smoke breathers or anything, but after being around folks like that so long, he was pretty skilled at singling them out when he saw them, and Jack looked like the people who'd gone cold turkey and couldn't stand it. He couldn't remember staying somewhere this long before, truth be told. Maybe he had and he'd spent it all in a haze, but consciously, he was never in one place consecutively for more than a day or two. So he killed a kidnapper. They thought that was a bad thing? In Hancock's book, allowing people to pull that kind of shit and make life harder for everyone else was the real mistake, especially when it came to fucking with kids, who were the last bits of innocence this world had. Maybe there was more to the story than what Jack told him, but if the bottom line involved killing an abductor...That still meant one less asshole on the planet. Someone had to stick it to the people who thought they could do whatever the hell they wanted without repercussions. "Neither of those strike me as reasons for hatin' a man. Maybe dislike, but hate's a strong word." Spars weren't part of Hancock's lifestyle, truth be told. He sharpened up the ol' killer instinct in a more direct, hands-on approach, lacking the safety gloves in spars. If Jack was teaching a lesson about fairness, then that could slide. At least for him. Hancock could understand the recipient wouldn't be too keen on making nice with Jack after that. "Damn. All tied down, huh?" Another breath, and he just about choked on the damn cigarette when the heart attack was mentioned, blasé and casual.

"What are you doin' talkin' to me? Give me that." Stretching up on his tip-toes, Hancock attempted to reach for the cigarette, but his arms weren't quite long enough to reach and he didn't have enough height on him. "You oughta sit down, man."
