— he was used to having to leave at a moment’s notice. danger lurked around just about every corner it seemed; he wasn’t a stranger to violence and death. it was sad for most to envision packing up and leaving everything you knew without even a sentimental goodbye. at this point, rich couldn’t say he possessed much in this world that made it difficult to leave a place. he had already lost everything to such bitter circumstances way before any of these tragic events came around. to say leaving the prairie was a difficult decision would be a lie. he didn’t particularly have much of a choice, either.
richard wished he could say he was shocked by this turn of events, yet things rarely tended to take him by surprise nowadays. even as the remaining members of the group looked at him in disapproval, and fear, and shame- he didn’t take it personally. they had lost so much because of him. they lost almost everything thanks to him. there, with a target on his back and a power-hungry leader readily lining up his shot, rich knew it was best to leave for better shelter. refuge. the weight of it all made scaling up the mountain pale in comparison.
the air was starting to feel thinner as he made his way up, flexing and relaxing frigid fingers in his coat pocket to try and bring back blood flow. people told him that now was as good a time as ever to make the climb. as he blew a breath of cloudy air out into the afternoon chill and looked around, he wondered what the bad times to travel looked like. he had been aware that it wouldn’t be an easy trek, though he had to admit that he at least slightly underestimated the physical toll the climb could take on a person.
the lodge was a sight for sore eyes. he slowed to a stop, staring out across the thin layers of snow. he worked to catch his breath from the arduous trek, waiting only a second before taking his hands out of his pockets. cupping them together and holding them close to his mouth, he breathed into them to try and bring back more warmth. eyes peered up back towards the lodge, watching as someone from the building began to approach.
