the dainty tattoos. the alarm going off at 6:20 just to watch the sunrise. the whistle of the tea kettle. the quirky comebacks. the dirty adidas. he missed all of it. he missed the tumblr obsessed geek, who stayed up too late reading comic books and listening to the 1975. he missed listening her go on about astrology, and how their signs were most compatible. libra and aquarius.
but why had she left?
why did the lovable and unpredictable woman he loved so dearly leave him? what had he done? what caused her to cause so much pain and regret to his poor heart? the heartbreak was unspeakable. there were no words to describe the sorrow he was bearing. he didn't even know where she went. the car keys were still hung up near the door, and all of her clothes were still hung up messily. every time his phone buzzed, he was hoping it was her. the beautiful wildcard, who was majoring in psychology. the small home was empty without words, both meaningful and meaningless.
he figured her independence was catching up with her. the only reason she afforded college was that of him. she never liked that fact, but he owed her. he never had words to say when needed, and he didn't make her laugh the way she made him laugh. it was always unequal.
for a while, he thought about why she had left. before she did, she was acting oddly. perhaps a little more affectionate? that was probably the biggest sign, but there were more little signs. they were unexplainable but were there. was she leading up to what was going to happen? perhaps that was it. giving him the best time before she ditched him.
he just didn't understand her - why had she left? why hadn't she at least took her things? why had she left behind her perfume that reminded him too much of her? enough for him to chuck it out of the window. why had she left behind all of her shoes, that she saved up for such a long time to buy? why had she left the instant camera? or why did she leave the alarm clock? waking him up at 6:20 every morning. he knew he had the power to turn it off, but he never did. the highlighters that sitting neatly on their desk, the drugstore foundation, the half-full laundry basket, the empty teacup on the nightstand. all of it still sat, for weeks. even months. but why had she left?
and then it dawned on him.
she loved him.
and this melancholy feeling of her commitment was enough to make him cry.
