the small shout from somer carried along the beach as a small wave started to "attack" him. a chorus of giggles accompanied with happy little shrieks followed while he did his best to try and run from the oncoming wave before it could reach him. of course, with him still learning the ropes of various movements, especially when it came to skillfully running, he wasn't quick enough and the water caught up to him enough for it to reach above his ankles. the bottoms of his pants grew dark from the water, and bubby stopped moving as he bent down to examine what had just happened. "oh noooo!" his big blue eyes looked up expectantly at ophelia as she knelt down to be at his level. upset tears began to pool up in his eyes, his bottom lip hanging down in an overdramatic pout which ophelia softly mirrored at him.

"did the water catch you, bub?" she asked him, running a hand over his head softly as he was quick to nod his head. "yeah, that happens sometimes, but it's okay. do you want a hug?" without even responding, the toddler took a step over and fell into her arms, burying his face in his mother's shoulder. ophelia wrapped her arms around his small frame, rubbing his back lightly as she kissed his head. the two stayed like that, ophelia making no attempts to move or disrupt him from getting the comfort he needed in the moment, and just simply waited for him to decide when he was okay to carry on with their beach day. once he eventually did start pulling away, he sniffled some as he looked back towards her face, nodding his head when she asked him if he felt better.

"all betta, mama."

ophelia gave him one last kiss on his head before standing up. "yeah, it's all okay. here, look -" she walked towards the water, bubby letting out a loud and dramatic gasp as the water met her legs and soaked the bottom of her jeans just like his. his mouth hung open as he stood there, waiting to see what her reaction to the situation was going to be. almost as quick as ophelia cracked a smile and laughed, the toddler did just the same and mirrored her. bending down some, she looked towards her son and carefully splashed him lightly. somer let out yet another gasp, looking from the wet spot on his shirt to ophelia then back to the shirt. it took a few seconds for him to process what just happened, but it wasn't long until he began to giggle, stumbling towards her enough to where the water covered his feet before he started to kick water back at her.

jp stood not too far from the beach, hands in his pockets and a dwindling cigarette pursed between his lips. he hadn’t been at the district for too long, though it definitely seemed like a place worth sticking around for the upcoming winter. tolerable weather, people that seemed to mind their own business following a recent raid, according to an elderly shop owner. this was the perfect place for someone to lay low for a while and catch their breath, even while jp felt compelled to get back on the road as soon as he possibly could.

smoking absently, he turned his head towards the beach at the sound of a small shout. brows furrowed as he looked around the area for who was shrieking. it took him a moment to finally notice a kid scurrying away from the incoming waves, seeming delighted about being chased by the waves. he observed as the scene unfolded - the kid unable to run fast enough, the waves lapping at his pants, and the child getting upset. he watched absently, taking his cigarette out of his mouth to stub it out on the ground beneath him. sure enough, just as quick as the kid had been upset about his wet clothes, he was quick to being happy all over again and playful. jp slowly let out the last puff of smoke he’d been holding in, waiting a moment before making his way out towards the beach.

motherhood. he’d never understand it. “hey,” he said as he made his way over, stepping closer towards the duo, absently walking through the water. “are you from around here?” might as well try and get on the good side of the locals. even while he could be somewhat rough around the edges, he seemed to know at least the bare minimum on decency. it was sort of an old practice that he wasn’t used to, though. “i just got here for a bit of a vacation. how about you?”

Perhaps it was his own childlike exuberance which helped him work well with children, but it seemed as if youngsters would naturally gravitate towards him. With Arlo beside him, the pair wandered peacefully down the beach, a bucket of crabs swinging in Arlo’s hand. If only there were bigger crabs to collect, Arlo would point out several times, sighing with dismay at the smallness of each crab he’d managed to find so far. Green doubted they’d find any big enough crabs on the shore, but he supposed that after this walk he could take Arlo to a rockpool to search there instead.

On their way, Green slowed to a stop nearby where Ophelia and JP spoke, a small smile flickering at Green’s lips as he glanced between the both of them. ❝ He’s growing too fast. ❞ Green pointed out with a cackle, nodding towards Somer. Whilst he didn’t know Ophelia and her son for too long, the young boy seemed to be picking up on new words and skills daily. Green could sympathise with Ophelia; his little Felicity was also growing up too fast.

Arlo leaned with uncertainty against Green, eyes peering over towards Somer before he warily wandered a little closer. ❝ Want to… look at the crabs? ❞ He spoke, voice barely above a whisper. Arlo was desperate to make friends, even though he was a worried soul that took all relations with caution. A smile flitted at Green’s lips. Whilst Somer was only young, the fact that Arlo stepped out of his comfort zone to try talk to someone new was progress that he was proud to see.
