YOU'LL SOON FIND YOU HAVE FEW CHOICES
Greer once had their own little greenroots story; adopted at sixteen by a man with smile lines worn into his face and eyes as hard as diamonds. And then there was someone else for them to care about, someone else who was understanding and patient and wanted nothing in return for everything he gave. He taught them that life could matter, that their shaking hands could build something greater than themselves.
But things changed, death lurked at every corner and Foster had always been too kind for his own good. And now they were back to square one, split between the desperate desire to survive beyond all else and the desire to continue to do good in his stead. And survival was winning out; Greer couldn't be useful as a corpse, regardless of what they did to get there.
Those groups didn't sound close; maybe the journey was easier when you actually knew where you were going. Greer knew they'd probably spent days walking in circles, simply because one tree looked the same as the others and other distinguishing features were far and few. "Huh, that's a lotta places." Greer mumbled. "Must be a bitch to maintain your roads up here."
A bigger building, warmer but probably the hornet's nest; couldn't refuse the hospitality though, even though- "You said I could have my stuff back, these are mine." Greer objected, clutching the shears to their chest and eyeing Hayley suspiciously; they were glad she wasn't calling them kid anymore though. "-Will I get them back?" They were more fine with handing over their only weapon if they'd get it back later, when these people thought they were more trustworthy or whatever.
