marisol didn't know what was up with him lately. he had only been in this place for a short while and yet somehow he was different. whether that was on account of the new surroundings or not, he wasn't quite sure, but even still, he was very noticeably less observant than usual. or... well... okay, maybe that wasn't quite true. it wasn't that he was less perceptive, it was more that he was abnormally easily-distracted. he found himself getting lost in his thoughts more often than usual.

now, there were many different reasons this may be occurring. it could in fact be because of this new environment he was in, considering that there were so many things he wasn't used to for him to get lost in thought about. it could be the weather making him more tired and thusly more absentminded than usual, as there wasn't enough sunlight to keep him afloat for long enough to get himself together. or it could be the intrusive thoughts creeping their way into his brain as a result of that previously-mentioned exhaustion. thoughts about the one-who-shall-not-be-named.

either way, it was really damn annoying. he just wished he could be like his usual self again, but he doubted that would happen anytime soon. the only way it could would be if the weather cleared up (unlikely), his brain stopped being so rude to him (very unlikely), or he managed to get out of this place (impossible). in conclusion, he was probably going to be stuck like this for a good while, as much as he hated it.

oh. he was lost in his thoughts again, wasn't he? dammit. of course he was. unfortunately, before mari could get a grip again, he realized that he had just bumped into something. when he looked down he saw that he had been right, but also that it was probably a lot worse than that- it appeared that he had stepped on a child.

however, in a manner a lot less concerned than he probably should have been, he just stepped off and hummed, "you good?" oh, sunny, you dumb idiot.

contamination was everywhere. in the trees, in the water, in the bodies of the animals. humans had done this. they had upset the world, and the world had fought back. nothing was safe. bub looked up at the sky. that wasn’t safe either. birds had stopped singing and flying in the air, and their trills no longer plucked a string in the great song of the planet. he had loved ravens and their role in stories as wise birds, but had only seen one once.

suddenly, and to his surprise, he felt a weight on his back, and as it pushed down slightly, he heard his spine pop. letting out a panicked whimper, as soon as he could freely move again, he began to pedal backwards. his heartbeat beginning to regulate, he looked up at marisol, who seemed undisturbed by the incident. ”...you stepped on me!” he spoke, his voice soaked in disbelief. it had been an insult to his size and a strike to his building pride.

unlike bubblepup, marisol had been around for a long- and i mean long- time. five thousand years he had spent existing, in thousands of lifetimes and on thousands of worlds. he knew more about the universe than any mortal could ever hope to know, and yet he was unhappy. marisol envied children- despite everything, they often still managed to be joyful. perhaps it was their naivete, the thing mari had lost even before his father made him an omen-bringer, or perhaps it was an understanding of the world he would never see again. a different perspective on life.

but no matter. his mental state was of no importance in this situation or, really, in any situation. that was how he felt, at least. if he didn't care, why would anyone else?

hearing the child yell at him made a little smile of amusement appear on his face. not out of maliciousness, of course, he just thought it was hilarious that such a small person could be so... shouty. "alright, alright, no need to yell. did you break anything?" he asked, tone playful and, as per usual, pretty stuck-up. again, he just couldn't help it.

mari knew he should feel more mercy towards the poor kid, as it wasn't even his fault in the first place, but pity wasn't in his nature. he was bad at emotions in general, really. maybe he should work on that, considering he was now in a mortal universe once again, but he didn't think it was too big a deal. if anything, other people could just deal with it. besides, he wasn't asking them to complain at him, was he? they were the ones being negative. yeah... yeah.

[align=center][div style="width: 400px; text-align: justify; font-size: 12px; line-height: 12px;"]bub had usually felt surrounded by adults, or at least teenagers. most children were hit hard by the radiation – he had been hit permanently – and he knew of some who had been kept in the few dens there was by their parents. it had been the blasts in the distance and the fallout that killed them. so, due to the poor condition of the refuge group, he had taken to trying to help. in a way, he envied adults, because they were usually wiser and were able to do so much more.

as the adrenaline faded into the dust on the ground, he glanced up at the tom. his breathing still heavy from shock, he exhaled. ”no,” the word escapes through his mouth along with the breath. not much longer, when he had finally gotten rid of the aftershock of the fright, he seated himself, reluctant to leave yet. ”who are you?” bub stated curiously, his words seeming blunt but comical with his pitch. he hadn’t planned on fleeing right after he had gotten stepped on, but rather to face this stranger, who seemed rather amused at his actions.

admittedly, marisol couldn't quite understand bubblepup's perspective. i mean, he was an adult, he could do anything he wanted, but not in the same way as bub. bub wanted to be able to help everyone, a naive but honorable dream, and though marisol had every opportunity to do so, he always chose not to. it was the selfish piece of sunny that made said choice. most gods were benevolent in nature, always doing their best to assist the mortals in their times of need even when they didn't have to, but mari was the odd one out that would never even consider it. he wasn't a very charitable soul to start with, but he was heartbroken to add. in his eyes, he didn't owe the mortals any help.

after all, the mortals had lived at the sacrifice of his first and only love's life. perhaps he was merely single-minded, but it still haunted him every day. he wasn't the one who had died, and yet he had become a ghost. ironic.

but marisol shook off the thought. that wasn't any of his business, not anymore. that ordeal had ended generations ago, and there was no point in reliving it now. especially not when he was trying to have a conversation.

hearing the younger's words, mari smiled just a little out of amusement. "marisol, but sunny or mari would work as well. not that i expect you to be fond enough of me for that," he introduced, chuckling a bit at his own addition. i mean, he had just stepped on the kid. "what about you?" he continued in reference to the child's name. it was unlikely they would wind up as friends in the first place, but mari wasn't too concerned with that anyway. being friends with a child would be creepy, after all. he was just curious, really.
