"is it bad i want to kill him for it?" he whispered.

"j-judah! d-don't cry!" he squeaked softly, moving to hold the front of his shirt. he had never seen the other male cry before, and it make him feel like shit. it was his fault his best friend was crying, and it made tears fill his own eyes. "please don't cry, i didn't mean to make you cry.."

"i should have known. god, atti, i'm...i'm so sorry."

he turned around again at a banging and several vocalized barrages through the dorm room door, to which he shouted, "go the fuck away, Trenton," and turned his attention back to atticus, sitting back down on his bed and reaching for his hands again. and he did what he did on the couch: sat there and studied his hands, studied the dried blood in the creases in his palms and knuckles, felt the rough edge of his bitten-down fingernails, felt the bones in the joints in his fingers.

"atticus, did...did your dad do this to you?" judah knew that these happened, of course they did, but because it was happening to atticus, right here, right now...it was real. it was real.

"no."
if Atticus's father was dead, then he would be safe from whatever that angry man did to him over this summer. and probably, the summer before that. and quite possibly, the one before last summer, too. god knows how long this had been happening to atticus, and of the three years that he had known him, this was the first time that he had heard about it. he bit his lip. "i'm sorry i didn't know, atti. i should have known. i should have protected you."

killing Atticus's father was not an idea that would have ever resonated inside of Judah's mind, and it made him sick to think about it. but it made sense. "you can...you can stay at my place this summer. and this Christmas, if you want to take a break from Hogwarts. my mom would love you." he tensed up again, remembering that atti had said something to him sometime during their second year about him not having a mother and again, how awful was that? judah didn't know what he'd do without his mother, and then to be raised without one and an abusive father? his head was thinking faster than his body could process and he found him wrapping himself around atti again, holding him tightly.

Judah squeezed atticus tightly before pulling away, wiping his eyes one final time. he ran his hands over his face and tapped his cheeks twice, his way of getting him to wake up and snap out of it. his hands finally unlocked the door to the dorm room, much to his peers' delight and anger at him, which he was sure he would pay for later. a great way to start off the year, but he knew that it was worth it, trying to keep atticus safe.

he took Atticus's hand in his (as a friend, of course. there was no person's hand at the school he wouldn't hold to comfort them) and led him down the hallway, down corridor and corridor, until they came to a clearing, out to the quidditch fields. for the first time in a long time, kenny wasn't with them, which was almost a little strange, but it felt good for judah to be able to spend this time with atticus by themselves. "you don't..." Judah started, then paused. "you don't have to talk if you don't want to. we can just walk if you want. but i'm here if you ever need me, atticus. i will always be here."
