“i learned this the other day. watch.” with a forceful flick of the wrist, he sent the rock out across the water, skipping a few times before plunging into the water.
“yeah? when did you learn to do that?”
“when everyone was busy. slow day.” looking around for another rock, he watched as cas bent down to find one for himself. “what's the point in carrying a wallet if you don't have cash in it?” cas paused, seeming to already know where the conversation was headed without any sign of it going there. without acknowledging the direction the conversation was headed, he chucked the rock at the lake - watching as it skipped once or twice. roman stared, unimpressed. “not all of us get dragged along with mom and dad. even if i could most likely do a better job than you [b]and
livvy.”

huffing a short breath, cas crossed his arms over his chest. rome continued his search for the perfect stone. “you think so?”
”i [b]know so.”
“ro[i].” cas’s eyeroll was subtle, looking to one side as he shook his head. “you can’t go around acting like you know everything.”

roman shook his head to himself, folding the rock around with deft fingers. “but i do know everything,” he pointed out matter-of-factly as he sent the pebble skipping across the water. straightening, he watched as the rock skipped far more times than cassius’s previous throw, eventually falling beneath the water’s surface. he waited for each ripple to fade away before he turned to look towards his older brother, a brow quirked. cas held his gaze for only a moment, lips twitching upwards. if he was impressed, he didn’t show it. instead he simply bent down, picking up another stone paired with a small sigh.

“believe me. you don’t.” hands in his pockets, rome looked around at the ground for more rocks. cassius stepped closer, ro taking little notice. wrapping an arm around his younger brother, cas broke out into a rare smile. pulling him into a tight headlock, he grunted while ro struggled, a few notes of laughter passing under his breath. “maybe if you didn’t have such a
big head, mom and dad would be able to fit you into their plans, huh?”
hands around cas’s wrists, roman breathed, “they manage to make room for you to come along, don’t they?”

pushing his shoulder against his older brother, he pushed the man away. stumbling back, cas regained his composure yet again. cool eyes looked out towards the water, humming thoughtfully. “guess you’ve got a point, there.” a smile threatened to appear across ro’s features, the younger boy’s gaze lingering on cas before he looked out at the water as well. “does it matter that much to you? going out with us?”
“yeah.”
“but why?” contemplating the words, ro shrugged to himself. one would think the silence would spur on a tidal wave of answers, explaining everything he felt to his older brother.
“because we’re family.”
cas stood unflinching. then, he looked back down towards the ground, bending down in search of another rock. as if that was the only answer he needed - because it was.

the darrows were a family; they had always had each other’s backs. cassius might not have reacted to his words out loud, but he seemed ever-present in rome’s life after that moment. making sure to head out onto the streets with ro more, dragging the other along sometime for a night on the town… when his parents finally had him taking part in more important swindles, he couldn’t help but wonder if cas had a part to play in it, too. it was a thought he would never get the answer to. something he would never be able to know.

if roman had the power to achieve one thing instantly, it would be the power to bring his family back to him. yet, as much as he once prided himself on knowing everything, the whereabouts of his family was a blank slate in his mind.

blue eyes watched absently as arlo picked up a rock, holding it awkwardly between his fingers before launching it into the water. it skipped once before plunging into the water. ro hummed in approval. “you’re getting there.” pushing himself off from the rock he leaned against, he searched for some rocks in the sand. "here." holding one up, arlo eagerly took it. straightening, he watched as arlo prepared to throw the next one out. “you’ll be a pro in no time.” though, in the meantime, he had managed to find his own support group that was basically a family to him. he didn’t know arlo very well, though he seemed to have such an impact on green’s life that it felt only right to try and spend time with the kid. besides, in a way, spending time with arlo reminded him about gus, and spending time with his younger brother.

perhaps he would never know where his siblings were, where his parents were. but it felt safe to say he had found his own form of family all on his own. even if they weren't blood-related, they all felt like family to him.

Many, many years had passed since Green had lost the very last of his blood. His mom was sick, and did the bravest thing in the world when she let go of the last of her family. Green was moved to a foster home, and he imagined mom died alone with her only son in her thoughts. Ever since, Green quickly had to learn what it meant to form a found family. He would never try to undermine the importance of blood, but found family was just as special as whatever family he was born into.

It had taken him a long time to discover what he liked to believe was his forever family. Mickey and Arlo, Roman and Frank, and this group — it wasn’t much, but it was more than enough for Green. And even whilst they still struggled from the grievances that they had to deal with time and time again, Green loved and cared for these people with his unwavering presence all the same. For the first time in his life, he felt safe in the permanence of this family he’d created. This was his happy place, and he didn’t need anything but the people in his life to reinforce that.

A smile flickered across Green’s lips as he watched the way Roman skipped rocks with Arlo. Young Arlo was a shy boy, but it looked as if he had taken to Roman well, even referring to him as Uncle Roman when talking to Green. It was almost as if Arlo believed with a great certainty that Green and Roman were brothers. Though they didn’t share the same blood, it often felt that way. Yeah, they were brothers, and they always would be. ❝ Hey! No one told me there was a stone skipping competition going on here! ❞ Green exclaimed as a challenge, wagging his brows as Arlo whipped his head around to look at Green.

❝ It’s not! ❞ Arlo pointed out, Green narrowing his eyes before he hummed,  ❝ Really? Are you afraid I’d win? ❞ Ruffling Arlo’s hair, the young boy crinkled his nose before contending, ❝ No, I could win! ❞ Leaning down to collect a stone, Green turned his head to the side to glance up to Arlo, ❝ All right, it’s on. ❞ Green straightened up, glancing over towards Roman as he nodded towards him, ❝ You’re in the competition too, by the way. ❞ He provoked cheekily, adding, ❝ We need someone to be the loser. ❞ The impudence earned a giggle from Arlo, Green matching his smile as he looked out across the water. Whatever made Arlo happy.

looking over his shoulder, he watched as green approached and announced the stone skipping competition. he shook his head subtly to himself, looking out towards the ocean amid arlo and green’s light banter. arlo truly seemed to look up to green; their chemistry together was different, arlo acting far more comfortable around green compared to how he interacted with others. then again, maybe it was because green could still act a bit like a child, himself-- and, at this point, arlo seemed to think of green and mickey as family. it was a good thing he found such a great couple to take him under their wing, ro figured.

“the loser?” he repeated, brows raising as if in subtle disbelief. “you think that i’m going to be the loser?” bending down, he picked up a stone, as if a way to silently say game on. “arlo, you go.” he watched arlo’s throw, nodding to himself as he watched it skip a couple of times. not bad at all. he really was getting the hang of it.

after green’s throw, he stepped closer towards the shore. “now watch a real expert show you how it’s done.” roman was too competitive for his own good. biting his tongue in feigned concentration, he squinted before he released the rock from his hand with a quick flick. the rock made a disappointing two skips before falling beneath the surface. sighing, shoulders slumping, he watched the water’s gentle ripple before ultimately saying flatly, ”can i get a do-over?”
”no! no do-overs.”
“yeah? you’re only saying that because you won.” it might have been the way roman looked almost too nonchalant about coming in last, or the almost knowing look in his gaze, but there were certain clues that hinted ro had failed so horribly on purpose. arlo seemed as oblivious as green so often could be, beaming as he looked out towards the sea.

arlo went off in search of better rocks to skip with, leaving rome and green to stand alone. “he’s a good kid,” he uttered to the other man, watching arlo absently. “i don’t know who he got it from, because he definitely didn’t get it from you.” the snide remark was lighthearted, paired with a rare bump of his shoulder against green’s own. who would’ve thought when he met the poor orphan on the streets that this would be where he’d end up. roman’s closest friend, his brother, with such a beautiful life. who wouldn’t be proud of the other man?
