addy didn’t purposefully avoid the goats. he just didn’t see much use in going to them unless he had to. when he decided to take up the chores of caring for them, he found himself almost a loss. why the hell would he do that? staring at the goats as they ate the hay set out for them, he grimaced slightly to himself. one of the goats raised their head to stare at him, those soulless eyes staring ahead towards the redhead. something about it made addy’s eye threaten to twitch. christ. whose idea was it to get these ugly fucks anyway? more importantly- why? was goat milk that much of a luxury

then again, maybe that was a question that many people asked about the redhead, himself. he wasn’t exactly the most proactive around the district nowadays, sort of shrugging off most responsibilities for the comfort of his own home. for the familiar. he never prided himself on being an extrovert, but with all the events going on around the district as of late, he felt an extra bit withdrawn. he didn’t have the energy to be bothered by others when there were more important things that needed to be done. when lucerne didn’t have the medical supplies he truly needed to make the difference he wanted to make on the world. it was too damn hard to get these supplies. he was half-tempted to go get them back from the badlands himself.

yet another part of it kept him planted at the district, unwilling to leave. stuck taking care of the goats. sighing, he stared grumpily towards the goats one more time. then, taking a few steps closer, he watched as the goats seemed otherwise unfazed by his presence. probably used to people coming and messing with them all the time, and all the kids coming to feed and pet them. waiting a moment, he reached his hand out to slowly run down one of their backs. well, surely they didn’t have them for their fur; they weren’t the best animals to pet.

Well, except for the times that they would try to headbutt him in the thigh, but that was an experience far and few between. The benefits certainly outweighed that lingering fear of embarrassing himself if the goats were to ever ram into him, especially now that a lovely lady in the District had started manufacturing goats cheese out of any surplus milk. That could be in the market for future trades, Green anticipated. Maybe it would even be beneficial if they could find some more goats. Maybe they could even upgrade the goat pen.

He swallowed hard. Changing its appearance could do Green the world of good.

Returning a couple of milk pails to the shed from the woman’s home, Green cracked a grin at the sight of Addy as he wandered on by. ❝ You giving them a good fuss? They like head scratches, too. ❞ He pointed out, placing the buckets messily on the ground with a small clatter before swivelling around to walk over to the pen. Leaning on the fence, Green observed the goats eating nearby before looking towards Addy.

❝ You ever tried goats cheese before? Because you know that we’re tryna make some right now. Hopefully for trade but maybe also for ourselves. ❞ Addy more than likely didn’t care, but Green would continue to talk regardless. After all, goats cheese sounded sophisticated. Far more sophisticated than the classic cheddar blocks he’d seen before.

there couldn’t have been two people any more opposite. addy always considered himself and lucerne to be polar opposites, though sometimes he wondered if green was purposefully trying to prove him wrong. at least lucerne himself shared the redhead’s ever-present pessimism, and could come off as rather grumpy himself during conversation. green, on the other hand, was grotesquely optimistic, bright, and somehow always managed to get under addy’s skin. he was definitely coming around to the other man, though sometimes the man’s brighter disposition could be off-putting. it had been more tolerable now, but perhaps, as addy noted, that was because green just didn’t have much reason to be so bright and happy anymore. no one in the district did.

upon the other man piping up and making addy aware of his appearance, the man drew his hand back from the goat. “i just wanted to see what their fur felt like… i’ve never been this close to one of them, before.” he didn’t seem very interested in scratching the animals on the head. if anything, he edged closer towards green, seeming to favor his company over that of the goats’. “you’re the one that brought these things here; you’ve got to get along with them, right?”

“goat cheese?” he echoed, as if the idea of goat cheese hadn’t occurred to him before. “what makes their cheese so special?” was there really much difference between cheese made with goat’s or cow’s milk? guess he would have to find out sooner or later.
