I HEAR THE SEA, A LITTLE CLOSER TODAY ・✧
carla had planned her descent for a few months. her clothes, toothpaste, and other essentials were stuffed into her bag a year before; even though she often ran short on what to wear and was eventually forced to use her dad's toothpaste, she didn't want to risk getting anything ruffled before her move to a new town. her leave was meant to be a fresh start, and if she could help it, everything was going to be perfect.
contrary to the new boots and overalls she asked for, her mother sent her off in a pale yellow dress and an oversized sun hat. "and don't you dare cut your hair," she ordered, and carla, who had initially wanted to sport an aerodynamic pixie cut, found herself stubbornly attached to her long brown hair and was happy to oblige.
after she waved goodbye, carla took off. she realized that she didn't have much of a plan after that. what happened when she found a town? what if she didn't like it? could she leave, or did she have to stay there for the rest of her life?
"why so lost, carla?" arlo, her turkish angora, rumbled from behind her.
"huh?" at that moment, she hadn't been lost, but she'd nearly fallen asleep. "arlo, i don't know where i wanna go.." she craned her neck to scan the world below. "how about there?" she pointed at the ground ambiguously.
"where?"
"oh, i don't know...but arlo, i want a beach town. i want to swim. see? we've flown so far we're already by the ocean." there was no commentary on arlo's part, but carla kept at her blabbering. "or a mountain town..hiking would be fun, too, i think. i've never done either of those things. our old town was too plain for any of that stuff."
"oh, don't be like that. that plain town taught you how to be a witch."
"i know, i know. no need to tell me." carla huffed.
"that place seems nice." she gestured to a large, quaint-looking hilly area that lined the shore. "we can find another town if we want, right?" the question was seemingly rhetorical, as she had already begun her descent.
as it happened to work, carla was met with problems almost immediately after her arrival. she was sent wary looks from various old women, "accidentally" tripped by a couple of boys, and nearly arrested for -- for flying her broom, for goodness' sake!
she should probably go. god, she shouldn't have even left home in the first place. she was still inexperienced, and dumb, and, and -- why were witches treated so horribly here? what did she even do?
"sir, i'm sorry. i'm sorry, i really am, but this is the way i get around, you know?"
"thief! thief! thieeef!"
she watched the police officer bolt away with flustered fascination. she started to walk away, but slowed to a stop when a boy biked up beside her.
"haha, that person yelling thief was me. it was pretty good acting, wasn't it? i think it was pretty good, if i do say so myself," he flashed her a bright grin, but for some reason, carla wasn't amused. so many things had gone wrong that day that this boy was nothing but another thorn in her side.
"thanks." she gave him a curt nod and started to walk away again.
"oh, i'm tombo, by the way. well, my name's actually thomas boyce, but that's too long and it sounds kind of funny, so people call me tombo. you look mighty like one of those witchy girls, by the way."
she tried her best to pay him no heed. she glanced in a shop window and adjusted her huge sun hat, but could still see his reflection behind her.
"hey, does this thing fly?"
"stop looking at it." she spat, pulling back at her broom. "and for your information, it does."
